The Box Hill Hawks got their first win of season 2011 on Sunday in their annual ANZAC Day match against the Coburg Tigers. After losing to Port Melbourne in round 1, a bye in round 2 and going down to Williamstown by 11-points in round 3, the Hawks were hungry to get a win on the board as Paul Hooper reports.
Box Hill and Coburg have met every year since 2002 in the ANZAC Day Cup clash with the best player on the ground winning the Gibbs-Lines Medal. This medal is named after a legend from each club that were also serving military personnel. It is considered an honour to win, as both clubs have embraced the annual game and the ANZAC spirit that goes with the day. Prior to this year, the winning ledger was 6-2 in favour of the Coburg Tigers.
After a moving reading of the oath, the playing of the last post and singing of the national anthem it was on and Box Hill really hit the ground running.
Hawthorn listed Ryan Shoenmakers was playing a role up forward and kicked two goals in the first quarter that also saw singles from Hawk young guns, Tom Schneider and 23rd player, Sam Cust.
For Coburg, Andrew Browne was dominating the ruck but the Tigers didn’t kick a major until the twenty minute mark of the term and were 17-points down at quarter time.
The second term saw Box Hill a little inaccurate, but dominate the general play to go in at half time leading by 23-points. Paul Puopolo was great in defence and Will Seirakowski, Luke Bruest and Luke Lowden were doing well for the Hawks.
In the second half the Hawks blew the game open with winners all over the ground. 13 second half goals to 6 saw the Hawks run out winners by 76-points. It could have been worse for the Tigers as Box Hill were inaccurate kicking 22 behinds for the game.
Some of the best for the Hawks were captain Sam Gibson, Jarrad Boumann and young guns Tom Schneider, Sam Cust and Jayden Hoegel. Paul Puopolo won the Gibbs-Lines medal and Luke Bruest kicked 5 majors for the Hawks.
For Coburg, they will head back and dissect what went wrong after strong performances against the Northern Bullants and Sandringham in previous weeks. Andrew Browne was outstanding and other contributors for the Tigers were Clifton, Contin and Morris battled hard in defence.
