The Williamstown Football Club is excited to announce the signing of Leigh Williams from the Melbourne Football Club for the next two seasons. Before spending an injury interrupted season with the Demons in 2012, Williams played with Norwood in the Eastern Football League where he kicked 88 goals in their 2011 campaign.
Williams played most of his junior career down in defence, but a change of scenery saw the re-born forward flourish as he won the leading goalkicking award in the Eastern Football League in 2011. His form made AFL sides take notice and he was selected by Melbourne in the rookie draft.
2012 was a difficult year for Williams as he suffered a viral infection of the brain which halted his progress. Either side of this Williams suffered back and ankle injuries as he struggled to string games together. Williams still managed to play 12 games for the Casey Scorpions kicking 21 goals in total.
Seagulls Football Manager Chris Dixon said that securing Williams was a high priority for the Club.
“Leigh ticks a lot of boxes for us. Like a lot of our list, he’s at an age where he’s about to enter the prime of his career. Gaining a big key forward was one of our main priorities over the off-season so we’re elated that he’s going to be with us for the next two years.”
“We got pretty big wraps on Leigh’s work rate and professionalism from his time at Melbourne and we knew that a lot of other VFL and SANFL Clubs were chasing him so we’re pretty pleased that he has chosen Burbank Oval as his new home.”
