Port Melbourne’s Dean Galea is the first player to kick 50 goals in the Peter Jackson VFL for season 2012.
Galea slotted through his 50th goal early in the final term against Casey – his sixth of the afternoon, and second of the final quarter – before finishing the day with seven goals in his sides nine point defeat at the hands of the Casey Scorpions.
With the departure of competition leading goal kicker, and Port premiership player, Patrick Rose in the off season, Galea has become the main focal point up forward for the ladder leaders.
Coach Gary Ayres is full of praise for Galea, especially how he has progressed with his football this season.
“Dean has shown more leadership this year and more consistency as well.
“He has stepped up again after his break out year in 2011 and we hope that he has a very strong finish to the year and obviously figures prominently in hopefully a long finals campaign,” Ayres said.
Ironically for Port Melbourne, Galea’s two biggest hauls of goals – 7 goals against Geelong and Casey – have been in games in which the Borough has been defeated.
He has averaged four goals a game, and has formed a new partnership up forward with the likes of Chris Cain (35 goals) and Billy Burstin (23) in season 2012.
After 71 goals last year after the home and away and finals, and 48 in 2010, Galea is well on target to record his biggest season haul of goals by the end of 2012.
