Werribee Tigers will start the search for a new senior coach for season 2012 after the appointment of Paul Satterley to a development forward line coach role at Melbourne in the AFL.
After just his first season as senior coach of Werribee in the Peter Jackson VFL - where he helped the Tigers from 13th spot in 20010 to 5th and a Preliminary Final berth in 2011 – Satterley’s recent coaching record made him a prime candidate for the many assistant/development roles at AFL level.
The Werribee Football Club wishes Paul all the best in his new role as Development & Assistant Coach of the Melbourne Football Club.
The 1995 Werribee Liston Trophy winner has been back at the Tigers for the last three years, the first two running the club’s Academy for first and second year players and in 2011 as the first full time coach of the club. He was on a two year contract with an out clause should he get a job at AFL level.
President John Nicol, like all at the club, had mixed emotions regarding Satterley’s new appointment.
“It comes as no surprise that a quality individual like Paul would be on the AFL radar.
“The improved performance of the club this year under Paul and his team has been very good. While we are sad to see him leave Avalon Airport Oval, history tells us that another chapter will begin for Werribee under a new coach,” Nicol said.
“Paul joins the likes of Alastair Clarkson, Donald McDonald and Chris Bond as former coaches of our great club who have gone onto AFL level. We wish him all the best for the future.”
On the announcement of his appointment Satterley said, “I’m thrilled to be working with the Melbourne Football Club.
“I’ve put in some hard yards to get this opportunity, and I’m really looking forward to working with Mark Neeld and the other coaches to help develop and improve us as a football club.”
Satterley also acknowledged his time spent in recent years at the Werribee Football Club.
“I have really enjoyed my time at Werribee and want to thank the club for the opportunity they gave me.
“The support I have received from everyone at Werribee has been tremendous and I really appreciated it. I am sure the club will continue to enjoy great success on and off the field,” Satterley said.
“As a past player and now former coach, I will always have a special affinity with the club and the people involved”.
New Melbourne coach Mark Neeld was pleased to have someone of Satterley’s experience on his new team at the Demons.
“Paul comes with a strong coaching background at multiple levels, including the TAC Cup and VFL. He brings experience to our coaching group, and we welcome him on board.”
Satterley will join 2009 Coburg Tigers coach Jade Rawlings and 2011 Geelong Falcons coach Aaron Greaves on the Melbourne coaches panel.
Werribee will use the sub- committee of CEO Mark Penaluna, club legend David Lyons and President John Nicol, in consultation with their AFL partner North Melbourne, to find the right man for the job for 2012.
