North Ballarat has added ex-Carlton player Clinton Benjamin to its stocks ahead of its premiership defence.
North Ballarat Football Manager Marg Richards said Benjamin had recently joined the club to play alongside his brother Warren, who is listed at the Roosters AFL-aligned partner North Melbourne.
Richards told the Ballarat Courier the signing was an unexpected bonus and admitted Benjamin, who had been training solo over the off-season, was behind in fitness compared to the rest of Roosters list.
Benjamin, 20, is 189cm tall and was described in last year's AFL Season Guide 2008 as a "tall defender who has the ability to cover the ground quickly". He was a Western Australian Under-18 representative in 2005 and 2006 and was an AFL-AIS Academy graduate.
Over the past two seasons, he played 23 senior VFL games for the Northern Bullants. Coincidentally, Benjamin's best game came against North Ballarat when he kicked three goals in the Bullants 42-point win in round seven.
