AFL Victoria has welcomed a funding boost from EastLink that will benefit the Victorian football community.
ConnectEast has entered into a three-year agreement to sponsor AFL Victoria. The sponsorship has three components:
- The EastLink Cup to be held each year between the Box Hill Hawks and Frankston Football Clubs – the inaugural EastLink Cup will be held on June 22.
- An EastLink schools competition between eight selected primary schools along the EastLink corridor – the competition will expand over the next two years.
- Free entry for children to the Celebration of Victorian Football on Friday, September 26 at Telstra Dome. Thanks to EastLink, kids can see the double bill of the TAC Cup and VFL Grand Finals at no cost.
AFL Victoria CEO Peter Schwab said this was a wonderful partnership between AFL Victoria and EastLink.
“With other sports growing, this generous support is a boost for Victorian football, in particularly the growth corridors of the eastern suburbs, the outer east and the south-east,” Schwab said.
“It will be fantastic to see the schools along the EastLink corridor involved in the EastLink primary schools competition – any extra opportunity to promote the game and involve the next generation is vital.
“This kind of support from ConnectEast demonstrates its commitment to the community and the residents from Frankston to Box Hill who will use EastLink to get to their next football match.”
Schwab was thrilled that from June 22 another annual event in the VFL calendar would be born through the EastLink Cup.
“The Box Hill Hawks and Frankston Football Clubs, two of our great clubs and fantastic community hubs, will compete for the first ever EastLink Cup on June 22,” Schwab said.
“Like EastLink, the VFL is a community focused and family-friendly. It is a sentiment that will be maintained through the inauguration of this annual trophy.”
With free entry for children thanks to EastLink, the Celebration of Victorian Football on Friday, September 26 was now an even more attractive event, Schwab said.
“We encourage all families to get along and enjoy a night of terrific football that will showcase the TAC Cup and VFL Grand Finals – the cream of state footy,” Schwab said.
The $2.5 billion EastLink project opens on June 29. A community open day is being held on June 15.
