The spotlight is on the Victorian Football League this weekend as part of Australian Football's 150 Years celebrations.
With no AFL matches, Community Football Weekend is the perfect opportunity to attend a VFL match and commemorate this historic year.
VFL clubs will be hosting a number of special events (listed below) including the Williamstown Football Club, who will offer FREE entry for fans at its big match against top-four rival Sandringham.
An aim of the weekend is set an attendance record at the 1,300 games played across the country, so be sure to get along to a match.
Coburg Tigers:
What: Community Day – Coburg Tigers vs. Collingwood
Date: Saturday 10th May 2008
Time: 1.10pm
Where: ABD Group Stadium, Harding St, Coburg
Western Youth Girls sides Mercy College and St Albans will play a curtain-raiser before the VFL ABC TV game. Coburg will also hold Auskick at half-time as well as hosting a contingent from Legacy.
Box Hill Hawks:
What: Community Day – Box Hill Hawks vs. Geelong
Date: Saturday 10th May 2008
Time: 2pm
Where: Box Hill City Oval, Whitehorse Rd, Box Hill
The day will include a jumping castle and face painting for the kids, as well as guest appearances and photo opportunities with AFL mascots Hawka and Half-Cat. The two mascots will also match-up for a half-time celebrity race, which will be called by Box Hill Hawks Number One ticket holder, Peter Rowsthorn.
North Ballarat:
What: Community Day – North Ballarat vs. Tasmania
Date: Saturday May 10th 2008
Time: 2pm
Where: AUSTAR Arena, Creswick Rd, Ballarat
North Ballarat’s Victorian Women’s Football League side will play the Braybrook Bombers in a curtain-raiser. The Roosters are also backing the local breast cancer support group - Breastcancer in City/Country – on the day and will be provide free hand and shoulder massages for the ladies from 1 to 3pm.
Werribee Tigers:
What: Foundation Day – Werribee Tigers vs. Port Melbourne
Date: Saturday May 10th 2008
Time: Seniors: 2pm, Reserves: 11.10am
Where: Bartercard Oval, Watton St, Werribee
Werribee’s players, coaches and officials from its foundation year in 1965 will return to the club to celebrate its inception into the VFL. Western Bulldogs player Dale Morris will be a guest at the club’s luncheon.
Bendigo Bombers:
What: Community Night – Bendigo Bombers vs. Frankston
Date: Saturday May 10th 2008
Time: Seniors: 7pm, Reserves: 4.10pm
Where: Queen Elizabeth Oval, View St, Bendigo
Chairman’s barbecue for club sponsors and members and a launch of the Junior Jets community program.
Williamstown:
What: Community Day – Williamstown vs. Sandringham
Date: Sunday May 11th 2008
Time: Seniors: 2pm, Reserves: 11.10am
Where: Burbank Oval, Morris Street, Williamstown
In appreciation of the great support the club receives from the community, Williamstown’s home game will be FREE admission on the day to all spectators. The club has never thrown its gates open before.
Casey Scorpions:
What: Mothers in Football Day – Casey vs. Northern Bullants
Date: Sunday May 11th 2008
Time: Seniors: 2pm, Reserves: 11.10am
Where: Casey Fields, Berwick Cranbourne Rd, Cranbourne
There will be a special Mothers Day luncheon celebrating “Mothers in Football”. Players and members mums will be in attendance.
VFL Commemorative Coins
As part of this year’s 150 Years of Australian Football celebrations, the VFL has struck a commemorative coin that will be tossed at the start of each reserve grade and senior VFL match this weekend.
Every officiating umpire and the best player from each team will be presented with a 150 Year commemorative coin at the conclusion of each VFL match.
