In the only match today in the VFL, Sandringham claimed an important win against top eight side Williamstown.
Zebras keep finals hopes alive
Sandringham kept their finals hopes alive with a hard fought win over Williamstown today at Trevor Barker Beach Oval. Coming off a five game losing streak, the Zebras led for all but five minutes of the game, as they kept Williamstown at arm’s length for the majority of the afternoon.
The game started as a shootout with seven straight goals kicked before the first blemish on the scoreboard. The Sandringham defence had their work cut out trying to control the Williamstown tall timber of Ayce Cordy, Lukas Markovic and Tom Campbell who all lined up inside forward 50.
Williamstown had their own problems early controlling Tom Ledger (picturd) who continued to drift forward from the midfield to score two first term goals to match Zebras tall forward Spencer White who also opened with two first term goals. Ledger finished the game as one of the Zebras best with 27 disposals.
Sandringham led by two points at quarter time and 11 points at half time, after the Seagulls hit the front at the 13 minute mark of the second term. It would be the only time for the game that the Seagulls were in front, as by three quarter time the Zebras were out to a 20 point lead. While Williamstown had possession in their forward half for over 70% of the final term and got back within eight points, Sandringham were able to hold firm through the likes of Sam Dunnell and Hamish Shepheard marking and punching strongly in defence in the final term when needed.
Pat Veszpremi was the leading goal kicker on the ground with three for Williamstown, with Ledger, White and Tom Curren (Sandringham) each kicking two along with Seagulls’ Campbell.
Seb Ross was best for Sandringham with 30 disposals, along with Sandringham Dragons Tom Langdon (26), Ledger, Jimmy Webster (21) and Myke Cook (22).
Best for Williamstown were defenders Mark Austin, Cam Lockwood (who kept Ahmed Saad quiet) and Nick Sing, along with Ben Jolley (31 disposals), Campbell and Daniel Cross (35).
