In three big top eight clashes today, the winners were Box Hill Hawks, Geelong and Williamstown.
Ironically, the wins by those teams today see them sit in that exact order at the top of the VFL Bailey Ladders ladder, with Casey Scorpions the only side that will change their positions if they win on Sunday versus Coburg.
BOX HILL HAWKS d WERRIBEE TIGERS: The Box Hill Hawks extended their winning streak to seven, while at the same time ending the Werribee Tigers four game streak, with a 43-point victory today at Avalon Airport Oval. The win consolidated the Hawks spot on top of the VFL Bailey Ladders ladder for the second week. The Hawks came to play, kicking the first four goals of the game to quickly race out to an early 24 point lead. At quarter time Box Hill Hawks led by 30 points, but despite the Tigers cutting the margin to 19 points during the term, the half time margin was 34. In the second half Werribee got as close as 24 points, but Box Hill had the answers with nine individual goal kickers. Liam Tobin, Sam Grimley and Mitch Hallahan all kicked 3 goals, while down the other end of the field the likes of David Mirra, Kyle Cheney and Matt Spangher restricted the Tigers to just 10 goals. The returning Robbie Tarrant (3) and Addam Maric (2) were Werribee’s only multiple goal kickers. Jake Wilson was strong in defence for the Tigers, with Will SIerakowski, Scott Clouston and Robbie Tarrant named their best.
GEELONG d PORT MELBOURNE: Geelong repeated the result in the grand final replay, as they inflicted an 85-point defeat on Port Melbourne. Despite a close first term, where Port Melbourne led by eight points midway through the first quarter, the Cats clawed their way back to lead by 12 points at quarter time. After Port kicked two of the first three goals of the second term, Geelong went on a rampage, kicking the last seven goals of the half to take a commanding 52-point lead into the half time break. Jack Hollmer and Brad Hartman were the keys up forward for Geelong kick three first half goals apiece, as the Cats found multiple options to goal. The lead got out to as much as 92-points in the final term, but late Port goals reduced the margin to 85. It was the Borough’s lowest score of the season, and their lowest score against Geelong. Mitch Brown was best for Geelong holding Dean Galea goalless, with Josh Caddy (24 disposals), Josh Walker (11 d, 7 marks, 10 hitouts), Mark Corrigan (23d) and Andrew Banjanin (37 hitouts) among their best. For Port Melbourne, Dan Noonan, Tim Macmillan and Tom Gordon were their best, with Chris Cain (2) and Josh Scipione (2) their only multiple goal kickers.
WILLIAMSTOWN d NORTHERN BLUES: Williamstown recovered from a slow start to record a 32-point win over the Northern Blues. Trailing by six points at quarter time, the Seagulls opened the second term with the first three goals to quickly take the lead in the match – one they would not relinquish for the remained of the match. Despite the Blues defence of Matt Watson and Nick Duigan helping shut down the early Seagull targets, Williamstown took the advantage in the middle with Willie Wheeler, Mitch Wallis and Brent Prismall starting to get on top. In a close contest, two points was the Seagulls margin at half time, then seven points at three quarter time before they stormed home with six goals to two in the final term. Tory Dickson, in his second game back from injury, kicked four goals, and Wheeler kicked three. Their best were Wallis, Dickson, Wheeler, Nick Sing and Leigh Masters. For the Blues, Luke Mitchell kicked two first half goals, and Kane Lambert kicked two, with Andrew McInnes, Lambert (25 disposals), Watson (21) and Tom Bell (25) their best.
