The Frankston Dolphins have caused another upset to win their second game in a row for the first time since 2008, defeating Collingwood 14.12 (96) to 12.11 (83) at Victoria Park on Saturday as Jarrad Conron reports.
The Dolphins were able to get out to a good start and fought off a heavy AFL experienced Collingwood side.
After Collingwood kicked the first goal through a Jackson Paine set shot, Frankston were able to pile on seven straight throughout the first and second terms.
Collingwood were able to kick three of their own to steady the run going into the main break and bring the lead back to 20 points.
After half time, Frankston extended their lead to a game high 38 points with a balanced team effort.
Collingwood mounted a gallant comeback in the last quarter with six goals but weren’t able to run over the top of the Dolphins.
Michael Lourey slotted eight goals in a strong performance up forward for the Dolphins and was helped by Sam Lloyd who kicked two of his own with a host of others kicking one apiece.
Down the other end, Kyle Martin kicked four goals in his first game against his old side with Paine and Alan Didak slotting three each.
Mitchell Bosward , given the job on his former teammate in Martin, was one of the best for Frankston with coach Simon Goosey calling him a “typical leader”.
“No one probably deserves recognition more than Bos’ (Bosward), he’s been around and worked his backside off for years and after a few years, is a really good VFL player.”
Another who featured in the best for Frankston was Josh Dyson, who Goosey also had much praise for.
“He (Dyson) probably played his best game for the club, giving us a lot of drive off the back line” Goosey said.
For the Pies, Andrew Krakouer was electric through the midfield picking up 36 disposals with help from Ben Kennedy who had 30. Adam Oxley, Marley William, Jarrod Witts and Alan Didak were all also included in the best for the Pies.
Coach Dale Tapping focussed on his sides intensity after the match.
“I think their intensity around the ball was better than ours, particularly in the first three quarters. Their ability to outnumber us around the contests and it wasn’t until the last quarter where we started to breakeven in that area of the game.” Tapping said.
Frankston will look to cause another upset this week against the reigning premiers Geelong, who remain undefeated after beating Box Hill by five points on Saturday.
