Melbourne’s Matt Jones continued to fly the flag for this year’s crop of Peter Jackson VFL draftees with another solid performance in the Demons’ loss to St Kilda in Round 3 of the NAB Cup.
The 25-year-old has now played all three rounds of the pre-season competition and few would be surprised if Mark Neeld opts for his experience in Round 1 of the regular season.
The former Box Hill Hawk is renowned for his consistency and proved he’s ready for the step-up in class despite the Demons falling to the Saints after a costly laps in concentration during the second quarter.
Collingwood’s pre-season campaign continued with a strong VFL flavour on Saturday night with rookies Sam Dwyer, Kyle Martin and Jack Frost all getting another chance to show their wares on the big stage.
The trio - plucked from the VFL in the 2012 NAB AFL Rookie Draft - were again contributors for the Magpies, despite Nathan Buckley’s men finishing 34-points adrift of the Brisbane Lions.
Martin, a former Frankston Dolphin, led the way with 17 touches, while Port Melbourne export Dwyer collected 13, roaming in the forward half.
Key defender Jack Frost (Williamstown) had just five possessions but showed the Magpie coaching staff enough to warrant consideration throughout 2012.
