Former North Ballarat Roosters player Dean Towers has made a bold statement in his first AFL appearance, staring for the Sydney Swans over the weekend in the NAB Cup.
The 22 year old was a first round recruit for the Swans in the 2012 NAB AFL Draft following a stellar season in the Peter Jackson VFL where he was part of the inaugural VFL Academy, gained state team selection and was honoured with the Fothergill-Round Medal, awarded to the most promising young talent in the VFL.
Towers transitioned into the next level of the game swiftly, picking up five disposals and two contested positions in his first match against Carlton on Sunday. However, it was his second game against the GWS Giants that had tongues wagging. After amassing six disposals, two tackles and two contested possessions, Towers used his explosive speed to finish with a late goal on the run.
Another 2012 Peter Jackson VFL player took to the field over the weekend with Box Hill Hawks recruit Matt Jones representing Melbourne at Etihad Stadium. Jones was selected with pick 52 in the 2012 NAB AFL Draft and demonstrated why the Demons recruited him on Friday evening against Richmond where he delivered four kicks, two handballs and grabbed two contested possessions.
Unfortunately it was not enough to get Melbourne the win, with Richmond triumphing by 15 points.
