Michael Searle has been announced as the new captain of the North Ballarat Selkirk Roosters for season 2013.
The Roosters announced their leadership group for the 2013 Peter Jackson VFL Season last night following a vote undertaken by all current players at their recent pre-season training camp held at Lorne. The session was undertaken by former Roosters Captain and Leader, Shaune Moloney, under the “Leading Teams” model that the Club have followed for a number of years.
Michael Searl, Myles Sewell, Oliver Tate and Liam Hoy were all re-elected into the leadership group, with Stephen Clifton, Nick Couch and Bill Driscoll to join the leadership group for 2013. Clifton was a member of the leadership group before being drafted to Greater Western Sydney for 2011 and 2012, whilst Couch and Driscoll will be part of the leadership group for the first time.
Searle is a dual premiership player who has played 117 games of senior VFL football and was a member of the leadership group prior to heading overseas for 2 years in 2010 & 2011. He was re-elected to the leadership group upon his return last year. He will be ably assisted by Myles Sewell as Vice-Captain and Steve Clifton as Deputy Vice-Captain.
“The voting process for the leadership group was a very important part of our pre-season camp.
“I am looking forward to working with the new group and am very pleased with the process we went through,” senior coach Gerard FitzGerald said.
“I am confident that the elected leaders will lead by example and be true to the core values identified by the playing group as a whole.”
CEO Mark Patterson said the club held enormous faith in the process that elected these players to the leadership group.
“Whilst there has been a very sound legacy left by former leaders in Shaune Moloney and Marc Greig this new group will now shape the core values of the playing group which also represent the strong values of the larger North organisation.
“I wish to emphasise that the process implemented by the club to select the leaders is a fully player empowered model whereby the playing group all vote for the players that they see best reflecting the core values of the group.
“As a club we believe that this model provides the strongest and most sustainable model. Introduced in 2007 the process has served the club very well and we look forward to the new group providing sound and shared leadership in 2013.”
The recent playing and coaching camp held in Lorne provided the launching pad for the new season and the leadership announcement kicks off the season with the first serious practice being played on Saturday 2nd March at Eureka stadium against Port Melbourne.
Departures from the 2012 leadership group include retired captain, Marc Greig, Tim Brayshaw who has moved interstate for work and Chris Lynch who has a long term injury and has returned to Geelong for work reasons.
