There will be more than just the four points on offer this Sunday in the Round 19 Peter Jackson VFL clash between North Ballarat and Geelong.
The sides will be playing for $50,000 and the Cotton On Foundation Children’s Ward Cup.
The Cotton On Foundation has donated the prize money, which will be taken home by the Children’s Ward in the town of the winning team. Representatives from Geelong Hospital and Ballarat Base Hospital will be attending the game in the hope of taking home the cheque that will kick start the fundraising for their respective 2012 Run Geelong and Run Ballarat events.
This year will see the inaugural Run Ballarat event, which is based on the Run Geelong concept, now is in its fourth year. There is a 6km run / walk or a 12km run and 100% of participants’ registration fee goes directly to the children’s ward at the hospital. Run Geelong has already raised $750,000 for the children’s ward at the Geelong Hospital, which has resulted in a full redevelopment that will be complete at the end of this year.
This game will bring the two communities together and give people another opportunity to register for the Run’s, while also watching a great game of footy.
North Ballarat coach Gerard FitzGerald said his side is looking forward to the weekend’s match, and the added incentive for winning.
“It is great for the competition that an organisation would hold the VFL in such regard to be associated with it.
“There has been a lot of press about the Cotton On Foundation Children’s Ward Cup so the players definitely know about it. This game is very important because the boys are not only looking to win the Cup for their community but also get a victory leading into the finals,” FitzGerald said.
“We really appreciate the sponsorship that the Cotton On Foundation has provided and the opportunity that it presents.”
North Ballarat and Geelong go head to head at Eureka Stadium in Ballarat this Sunday August 5.
