Torquay’s Spring Creek Reserve will become the battle field for Williamstown and Geelong this Sunday in their Round 3 clash in the Peter Jackson VFL.
Williamstown General Manager Brendan Curry said the Club has chosen to play their home game in Torquay for the second year running due to the great response in 2011.
“The overwhelming feedback from Football Geelong, Torquay Football Club, Geelong Football Club, Surf Coast Shire and our players, officials and members was that the game at Torquay on Easter Sunday was an outstanding success.
“In 2011 we had 4300 people attend and are hopeful of an even bigger crowd this Sunday,” Curry said.
Williamstown enter Round 3 after an impressive come from behind win against the Northern Blues. Coach, Peter German, believes the team are a stronger unit as a result.
“We were very pleased that as a team with a lot of new players in 2012 that we could respond at 3 quarter time when we trailed by 4 goals to kick 6 goals to nothing in the final quarter. Hopefully the group derive a lot of confidence and belief from that effort,” German said.
Although this match acts as a Williamstown home game, Geelong VFL Operations Manager Ben Waller believes his team will reap the home ground rewards.
“We actually see it almost as a '10th' home game.
“We have the majority of the support and it is a ground that many of our players have played junior football on and know quite well,” Waller said.
“One of our senior VFL listed players Ben Raidme is a product of the Torquay Football Club and will this weekend play his 50th VFL match at the ground he calls home.”
Geelong heads into this weekend having only played one game for the 2012 Season. Round 2 saw the Cats beat Collingwood by 12 points. Max Rooke, Geelong’s Development Coach, was pleased with the team’s first round victory.
“To hang on and win against an experienced Collingwood side after we lost two important players (Tom Gillies & Josh Cowan) to injury in very hot conditions, is something our group can take a lot of confidence out of. Our young players will get a lot out of playing against players the calibre of Chris Tarrant, Ben Johnson, Sharrod Wellingham, Dayne Beams and Cameron Wood,” Rooke said.
Geelong and Williamstown are sitting 5th and 6th on the Peter Jackson VFL Bailey Ladders ladder. The contest this Sunday will have a profound influence on the Clubs as they shape their 2012 Season.
