WERRIBEE Tigers have made the stunning acquisition of 2007 AFL premiership player Nathan Ablett.
This comes as part of a triple swoop for the Tigers over the holiday period where they agreed to terms with former AFL-listed players Ben Ross and Tim Ruffles.
The biggest coup was undoubtedly the signing of Ablett.
The 26-year-old was a dominant force in the big league for a short period of time before announcing his premature retirement.
He returned to the AFL last year to play for expansion club Gold Coast Suns in their inaugural season, but could manage just two games.
Ablett is eager to reignite his football career and will become one of the most feared forwards in the Victorian Football League if he arrives at the cage switched on.
This was not simply a signing of a big name for the Tigers, either.
They had an urgent void to fill in the key forward position after swingman Brad Mangan was taken in the AFL rookie draft by North Melbourne.
New Tigers coach Scott West says Ablett will play a massive part in the team structure.
‘’I think he is the key position player we were looking for and he will fit into our club very well,’’ he said.
‘’We are very pleased he is on board.’’
Ablett is back in Geelong after some time living on the Gold Coast.
He remains committed to his football career.
‘’I am very excited,’’ he said.
‘’I am still keen to play and I want to do well with Werribee.’’
