BRENDAN Fevola’s AFL career hit a brick wall when he was sacked from the Brisbane Lions, but landing at Casey has helped propel Tim Mohr to Greater Western Sydney.
The VFL defender will be the Giants’ hope of stopping Lance Franklin, Jonathan Brown and Nick Riewoldt next year after winning a place on their senior list without fanfare.
The Giants last night signed Mohr and Adam Kennedy, a 19-year-old midfielder from the Western Jets, under AFL rule that allow the new club to recruit players previously nominated for the draft.
Mohr, 23, grew up in Launceston and has never graced the surface of the MCG.
But all season the budding star has received tutelage from Fevola, which has helped transform him from a second-tier toiler to a potential AFL star.
The 195cm, 98kg defender claimed the Scorpions’ best-and-fairest after a season punctuated by lowering the colours of boom VFL forwards Dean Galea, Ben Warren, Shaun Hampson, Trent West and Matthew Little.
"Fev was actually really, really good for my footy this year, he's a great teacher. He gave me the confidence to do things and pulled me aside and drill things into me," Mohr said.
"He’d tell me to use my pace and take the game on, so he was super for me. When you’ve got a bloke like him, who was an AFL star, telling me to use my pace and take the game on you sit up and listen to them."
And Mohr urged Kevin Sheedy to throw the dual Coleman medalist a lifeline, declaring him "fantastic to have around a footy club".
