The Werribee Tigers had a bad day at the office, going down to the Bendigo Bombers by 66 points at Windy Hill last Saturday as Ben Carbonaro reports.
After last week’s strong home win over Box Hill, Werribee were looking to keep the momentum going and beat a Bendigo team that had been playing some consistent football before the bye.
Bendigo were on top from the first quarter, as they played a style of football that featured pinpoint passing and strong midfield running. Despite Werribee’s best attempts to get the ball into their forwards quickly, they were not able to hit their targets. The home side led by nine points at quarter time.
The home side continued to play more disciplined and accurate football, as they piled on seven goals to three. Werribee turned the ball over countless times and despite their best efforts to retain possession, Bendigo’s pressure didn’t allow them to do so. The Bombers led by 26 points at the main break.
Missed opportunities in front of goal cost Werribee dearly during the third quarter as they kicked one goal and five behinds. This virtually erased any hope of a Tigers victory. It was the home side on top by 26 points at the final break.
The Bombers ran over the top of Werribee thanks to their slick work in defence and eight goals for the quarter. Despite several Werribee attempts to get the ball moving quickly and cleanly, it proved to be ineffective.
Tigers coach Paul Satterley was disappointed on all fronts.
“We just would have loved to have headed into the bye with a better result, win, lose or draw,” he said.
“I thought we didn’t take the game on like we had been (doing) in the past and the most disappointing thing was that it was such a contrasting performance from the week before.”
Ruckman Sean Tighe kicked two goals in another promising performance for the former Western Jet and North Melbourne-listed defender Robbie Tarrant (31 disposals)was best on ground playing at full-back.
Majak Daw (33 hit-outs), Matthew Scott (27 disposals, 1 goal) and Ben Sharp (26 disposals) also impressed for the Tigers.
The competition’s premier full forward Matthew Little and Tory Dickson both booted five for Bendigo, while David Myers (26 disposals) was best for Bendigo.
In the reserves:
The Werribee reserves rebounded from their loss to Box Hill last week with a 24-point over North Ballarat 11.14.80 to 8.8.56
Rhyce Prismall and ex West Coast rookie Will Sullivan both kicked two goals, while Joel Magnabosco was best on ground.
The Tigers have a bye this week before hosting Northern Bullants in a TV game on Saturday May 21st,. Bendigo have a big test taking on fellow top eight side Casey Scorpions.
