A club record 10-goals from Aaron Edwards ensured North Ballarat returned to the winners list in its round six clash with Geelong at Skilled Stadium last Saturday as Luke Mason reports.
Edwards, an emergency for AFL affiliate North Melbourne's match against the Cats later that afternoon, had four majors before half time, with six in the second half guiding the Roosters to a comfortable 45-point victory.
His 10 goal haul was the first in the VFL for the season, and beat the Roosters previous club record of nine goals by Adrian Collard in rd 18, 2001.
The win is North Ballarat's second for the season, but Gerald FitzGerald's men have now won two of their past three (with a cliffhanger loss against the Pies by only a point between wins), and are beginning to find some of the form that led them to the past three VFL premierships.
Geelong meanwhile, remain winless and share last position on the ladder with the Coburg Tigers and Frankston.
Although their youngsters, such as Josh Cowan and Jesse Stringer, battled hard onball, the Cats forwards continued to get sucked up the ground, particularly in the first half, which allowed the Roosters to out number them in the aerial contests and then take the ball coast to coast from their half back line.
They began the morning looking likely to take the challenge up to the Roosters, with Ben Johnson and Steven Motlop looking lively in attack, but as Orren Stephenson worked his way into the ascendancy in the ruck, so too did North Ballarat around the ground.
Edwards was the clear standout on the day with an amazing 11 contested marks against Geelong's Tom Gillies, but he was the recipient of the excellent onball service of Cruise Garlett and Myles Sewell, while Cameron Richardson was another to find form.
The Roosters return home to Eureka Stadium on Sunday after three weeks on the road, and will turn their attention to the Coburg Tigers, while Geelong will look to notch their first win of 2011 when they face off with Collingwood at Victoria Park on Saturday.
