The VFL is proudly hosting a CFA volunteer recognition match as part of a community weekend in Gippsland on August 8-9, featuring two of the top teams from Victoria’s premier football competition in Casey Scorpions and North Ballarat.
The match was moved to Morwell to give the local community an opportunity to come and support CFA volunteers. AFL Victoria CEO Peter Schwab said the VFL was pleased to be able to support CFA volunteers.
”As a gesture of recognition, we invite CFA members to VFL games across the state free of charge – and we hope to get as many of them as possible to Morwell for the big game.”
CFA Chairman Kerry Murphy said recognising volunteers was important in the build up to this years fire season.
“This is a great opportunity for the local community to come together as we begin to enter preparations for the next fire season,” he said. “Together with VFL, we are taking another step forward in recognising the great work and dedication of volunteers across Victoria.”
Morwell lies in the heart of Gippsland which was severely affected by three separate major fires during the 2008/09 Victorian bushfire season.
This is an important weekend for the Morwell community, with the traditional showdown between Victorian Country Football League clubs Morwell and Traralgon to take place the following day.
Members of several local CFA brigades will be in attendance and an exhibition game between VFL and CFA members will feature during half-time.
