In a match that had been billed as ‘Redemption Day’ for the home side Frankston, Williamstown did not let the game go to script as they held on in the final term for a 30-point win.
Despite the home side throwing everything at the visitors in the final term to get within two points, the Seagulls settled with the final four goals to secure their first away win of the year, as Dale Fenney reports.
The first quarter started with Williamstown gaining the advantage kicking the first four goals of the game. Frankston fought back towards the end of the quarter, getting two late goals to cut the quarter time deficit to 14 points.
It didn’t take long for Williamstown’s Kirby McConnon to kick his second goal in the opening minute of the second quarter, but Frankston replied with the next three to steal the lead. In a tight term, Williamstown wrestled back the ascendancy to extend their lead to 21 points at half time.
McConnon pushed his goal tally to four for the day in the third term, as Williamstown pushed out to a 43-point lead. Luke Potts however gave his side a glimmer of hope, kicking both of the Dolphins goals in the third term, but his second helped cut the Seagulls lead back to 37 points at three quarter time.
The Dolphins came out in the last quarter with their never say die attitude and kicked six unanswered goals to open the final term and slice the lead down to just two points.
With the margin reduced to under a kick, the Seagulls responded as Pat Veszpremi kicked the first of four unanswered goals for the visitors to record a 30-point win.
Whilst pleased with the win, Williamstown coach Peter German said the performance was far from their best.
“Our performance was probably a six out of ten. So at times it was a game where we played really well at patches, a couple of times there we kicked four or five goals in the space of six or seven minutes but then a lot of the time we let the opposition back.
“I think our overall performance was a really up and down type game.”
For the home side, it was another missed opportunity.
“We needed to make the most of our opportunity. Just little mistakes as players we need to learn from and move forward,” Frankston coach Simon Goosey said.
“To the players credit, we never gave up.”
Frankston have the bye this week, and might look forward to the return Khan Haretuku in round eight after the Dolphins big man got through 70% game time in the development league Sunday. Williamstown returns home to take on Bendigo Gold.
