Collingwood have kicked off their 2011 season with a bang, blitzing a young Dolphins side 18.14.122 to 7.6.48 at Frankston Oval on Sunday as Anna Harrington reports.
AFL listed players Alex Fasolo, Leon Davis and Brad Dick were all prominent in the 74 point win as the Pies outclassed last year’s wooden spooners.
Collingwood had six multiple goalkickers, led by Dick and Jack Perham with three apiece, while Scott McCallum kicked two for the Dolphins.
While Frankston competed well in the first quarter, their lack of a genuine forward target cost them as Collingwood rebounded easily out of defence, the Dolphins’ woes summed up by forward Luke Clark’s three missed shots at goal.
Collingwood drew first blood as Perham marked in space and ran into the open goal to score, Seamus McNamara scoring shortly after to put the Pies up 12-1.
Frankston got off the mark through Anthony Simpson, who played on from a free kick and slotted a neat goal.
While both teams got a lot of the ball, it was Collingwood who took their opportunities, kicking five goals straight for the term to lead 30-8 at quarter time.
In the second quarter Collingwood stepped it up, asserting their strength around the contests and punishing the Dolphins with the ball.
Fasolo was busy around the stoppages, ably supported by Tom Young in the grunt work, while Davis dashed through the middle laying off slick passes.
Mark Baguley and Luke Potts worked hard through the midfield for Frankston but the Dolphins’ hard work was largely undone by poor disposal and the solid rebounding work of the Collingwood defense.
In his return from injury, Collingwood forward Brad Dick stamped himself on the game, sneaking two sublime goals to put the Pies’ lead beyond 40 points.
Frankston only managed one goal for the quarter and went into the main break down 76-22.
The third quarter was much of the same, Baguley kicking an early goal for Frankston before Reed, Dick and Bull slammed home goals to leave the Pies ahead by 77 at three quarter time.
Frankston redeemed themselves in the final term, kicking three goals to win the quarter by five points, Collingwood running out 74 point winners.
