The Coburg Football club has registered its first win of the VFL season against Collingwood by 39 points, piling on 20 goals to10 after quarter time as Brittany Shanahan reports.
The Pies came out firing in the opening term and their forward’s offensive pressure was second to none. Ben Johnson was blocking every attempt the Tigers made to exit their defensive 50 before he suffered an injury and took no further part in the match.
Defender Tom Young had chipped in and kicked a goal for the Pies and they were up and about until the Tigers got within three points at the main break and didn’t look like they were backing down without a fight.
The Tigers began to purr as it was raining goals at their end of the ground in the third term where they set up their win. Dylan Murphy booted six goals (two in the third) for the match and Tom Hislop impressed with three.
Angus Graham was instrumental for the Tigers dominating the ruck contest (28 disposals, 27 hit-outs) against the Pies American recruit Seamus McNamara and contributed two goals to the scoreboard.
It was a dismal final quarter for Collingwood and the sound of the final siren couldn’t have come quick enough with Coburg kicking seven goals to three.
Despite the loss Collingwood have got to like the look of young Daniel Farmer who was buoyant up forward in the final quarter trying to create opportunities for the deflated-looking Pies.
After the match Coburg coach Adam Potter was pleased with the win against the Pies and his young sides ability to put the foot on the accelerator after quarter time.
“I’m very happy (with the win) because after quarter time we really dominated play,” Potter said.
“I think in the first quarter some of our turnovers and decision making out of the back half was a little bit costly.
“We addressed that at quarter time an we made sure we got that heading in the right direction.”
Whilst there is an alignment with AFL club Richmond, Potter was pleased with the development of his young Coburg players who were selected in the side.
“We had 13 Coburg listed players play today,“ Potter said.
“For Dylan Murphy to come out and kick six in his first game of the year and for Willie Wheeler to continue to develop as an inside mid, that’s really exciting for our future as a footy club.”
Coburg will enjoy a bye this week but Potter isn’t taking it lightly as they return to face a big challenge, taking on Gary Ayres’ undefeated Port Melbourne line-up.
“We are looking forward to the break but we have a really tough game after the break so hopefully we can take a little bit of confidence out of today.”
“We have to get our feet back on the ground and work hard over the next week and a half to make sure we are prepared for what is going to be a tough game.”
