Richmond has kept themselves within reach of the top eight with a 35-point win over Casey Scorpions at Punt Road Oval.
The win keeps the Tigers within two games of the top eight, but over 20% behind which will be a tough ask over the final six games of the season, as Dale Fenney reports.
Richmond started the first quarter off strongly with the first two goals, but Michael Evans and Jake Best quickly answered for the visitors to level the scores. Matt McDonough sneaked two late goals for Richmond to give the home side a 15-point quarter time lead.
Richmond’s pin point passing paid off within the first 10 minutes of the second term, with quick goals to Liam McBean, Sam Lloyd and Nathan Gordon. Casey tried to slow the game down and found a reply through Nathan Page but the margin was still 24 points.
The Tigers tall timber then started to control the game, with strong marks inside forward fifty to Orren Stephenson and Aaron Edwards pushing the margin out by 40 points. Right before the half time siren Ed Morris scored a late goal for the Scorpions to bring the margin back to 34 points.
Richmond put the game beyond doubt in the third term, kicking three unanswered goals to Lloyd, Ben Griffiths and Ben Lennon to end the third quarter with a monster 51-point lead.
The final term started goal for goal as McBean added his fifth and Page his third for their respective sides. Casey ended the game strongly with three unanswered goals to James Strauss, Jay Kennedy-Harris and Daniel Welsh bringing the margin back to 35 points, but the damage had been done, as they suffered their ninth loss of the season.
Next week Richmond travels to Simonds Stadium to tackle on Geelong at 7:30pm Saturday night while Casey travels away to Queen Elizabeth Oval to take on Bendigo Gold at 2:00pm Saturday afternoon.
