Werribee books a Semi Final berth
Werribee Tigers have won through to the Peter Jackson VFL Semi Finals with a 19-point win over Essendon.
Werribee set up the win with a blistering eight unanswered goals in the second term to keep their season alive.
The signs were not good for the Tigers early, as Essendon entered quarter time with a 28-point lead with the breeze.
This was on the back of five unanswered goals to end the term, with Cory Dell'Olio proving dangerous with three first term goals, while Scott Clouston was sticking close to Scott Gumbleton and nullifying his influence.
Werribee struggle to find marking options up forward, with Warren well held by Josh Freezer.
All that changed in the second term as Werribee kicked eight unanswered goals for a 52-point turnaround, and a 24 point half time lead.
Werribee used the breeze to their full advantage, kicking six of their eight on the run. Adam Maric added two, Speight his second as the Tigers' midfield got on top.
Essendon continued the game trend in the third term reducing the margin to just four points with the first three goals, but back to back goals to Ben McKinley swung momentum back the way of Werribee.
With a 16-point three quarter time lead, and the breeze, Werribee made sure of their win with the opening three goals of the final term racing out to a 35-point lead – their biggest of the match.
While Essendon managed to kick five of the last seven goals of the game, Werribee had done enough to book a Semi Final berth against Casey Scorpions next Sunday at North Port Oval.
McKinley led the Tigers' goal scoring with four, along with three each to Speight and Maric. Luke McDonald was their best with 28 disposals, along with Dan Currie in the ruck, Jarred Morre (26) and Ayden Kennedy (22).
For Essendon Dell'Olio kicked five, with Matt Firman, Josh Freezer and Will Hams their best.
