Cats run over Coburg
GEELONG escaped with a hard-fought win over Coburg today after see-sawing battle at Mantello Holden Oval.
The Cats overcame a three-point three quarter time deficit to emerge with a 16.19 (115) to 14.12 (95) victory and remain in equal top spot on the ladder.
Little separated the two sides for much of the afternoon until the Cats burst out of the blocks in the final term thanks to unlikely hero.
Usual key defender Ryan Bathie was sent forward and the move paid dividends with the former basketballer bagging two crucial goals.
Geelong rookie Josh Walker finished the day with five goals and impressed all with his contested marking. Jack Hollmer was also lively with three goals, while Nathan Vardy and Jaxson Barham bagged two each.
Mitch Brown was named best on after another stellar game in defence to put his case forward for a senior recall.
Luke McGuane kicked three for Coburg, who were also served well by Addam Maric (two goals), Liam McBean (two), Robin Nahas and Shane Tuck.
Seagulls blitz Hawks
Williamstown has stamped itself as a serious premiership contender after dispatching the Box Hill Hawks today by 25 points.
The Seagulls had 13 scoring shots in an explosive first term that saw them surge to a 29-point lead over the ladder leaders.
With Dylan Addison (four goals) firing up forward and captain Ben Jolley and Daniel Cross in control in the middle, the Seagulls extended their lead 35-points at the main break.
A mini-rival by the Hawks, led by Matt Spangher (three goals), breathed life back in the contest before the Seagulls steadied with the final three goals of the quarter.
Despite holding the Seagulls in scoreless in the final term, the damage had been done and the Hawks’ seven-game winning streak was over.
Lukas Markovic kicked three for the winners to be a perfect foil for the clean hands of Addison, while Brent Prismall, Jason Tutt, Jolley and Cross were all beneficiaries of Cameron Wood’s ruck dominance.
Mitch O’Donnell and Angus Litherland were among the best for the Hawks.
