Port Melbourne 16.17 (113) d Williamstown 9.12 (66)
Port Melbourne has sent an ominous warning to its rivals in the Peter Jackson VFL with a 47-point triumph over Williamstown.
The Borough proved the far superior side in the top-of-the-table clash, slamming home six goals to one in a dominant final term.
Champion full forward Dean Galea finished with six goals, while Toby Pinwil was everywhere, collecting 30 disposals in an impressive return from injury.
Shane Valenti was also prominent in his first match of the season, bagging two goals and showing his ability to win the ball in close hasn’t diminished. Sam Pleming, in his 150th game for Port Melbourne, was another star, collecting 20 possessions and putting in a contender for mark of-the-day
Anthony Anastasio finished with two goals for the Seagulls, who had few winners despite trailing by just 10 points at the last change.
Christian Howard found plenty of the ball across half-back and youngster Lachie Hunter had his moments, but none of the Seagulls’ prime-movers ever really got going.
Coburg 11.22 (88) d Bendigo Gold 11.12 (78)
Coburg emerged with a thrilling 10-point win over Bendigo Gold, narrowly avoiding becoming Gold’s first victim in the Peter Jackson VFL.
After a 173-point hiding at the hands of Williamstown last week, Gold responded with a gallant effort that brought them to within a point in the dying stages.
But a much-sought-after victory wasn’t to be with Coburg steadying and clinching an important victory.
Richmond-listed forwards Liam McBean and Luke McGuane each bagged two goals in the win, while Robin Nahas was best afield with his run and carry crucial to Coburg prevailing.
For the unlucky losers, captain Steven Stroobants (two goals) and Jack Sheahan (2) were key contributors, while Daniel Toman showed his ability to win the ball, both in the air and on the ground.
Werribee 14.17 (101) d North Ballarat Roosters 10.16 (76)
Werribee has shrugged off a dogged North Ballarat Roosters outfit to claim an important 25-point victory.
The Tigers are now back to four wins and four losses after eight games and poised to climb the ladder in the second half of the season.
In front of their home fans, the Tigers leapt out of the blocks to seize the momentum and a 16-point lead at quarter time.
But the Roosters, led by Liam Anthony and Steve Clifton, muscled their way back into the contest and trailed by just two points at the main break.
But with Ben McKinley (four goals) and Scott Clouston (two) providing a target up forward, the Tigers edged ahead and eventually snuffed out the Roosters’ challenge.
Levi Greenwood was named Werribee’s best for his work around the stoppages, while Jarred Moore and Majak Daw were both significant contributors.
The loss leaves the Roosters with just two wins from eight matches and beginning to lose touch with the top eight.
Box Hill Hawks 18.23 (131) d Frankston 8.7 (55)
The Box Hill Hawks have moved into second position on the Peter Jackson VFL ladder after thrashing Frankston by 76 points.
The Hawks, with Sam Iles dominating in the midfield and Jonathon Ceglar (three goals) providing a target up forward, put the foot down after half time to cement their standing as a premiership contender.
A 31-point lead at the main break became 67-points by three quarter time and the Hawks never looked back
Mitch Hallahan continued his impressive form with three goals and plenty of possessions, while Xavier Ellis (2 goals) and Sam Iles were highly influential in the midfield.
Michael Lourey played a lone hand up forward for the Dolphins with three goals, while Shane Hockey and Ziggy Alwan never stopped trying.
