Round 7 of the Peter Jackson VFL was today completed with Casey defeating Geelong. The win means Port Melbourne are the new ladder leaders at the end of the round.
CASEY SCORPIONS d GEELONG: An 11 goal to three third term has set up victory for Casey against Geelong. The win broke a two game losing streak for the visitors, whilst the Cats suffered their second loss in a row after winning their first five games of the season. The third term onslaught was similar to the two sides 2011 round 18 encounter, when Geelong blew the Scorpions away with a 10-goal to four opening term on their way to a 128 point win. But the result this time around was to be very different.
The Scorpions trailed in the first half, unable to kick their first major until the second term after a six behinds first term, but Jesse Hogan started to stamp his authority on the game up forward in the second quarter. Hogan finished the game with five goals, and worked in tandem up forward with Jack Fitzpatrick who also finished with five; his final goal giving the Scorpions a 13 point win and stopping the Cats final term run. Despite Casey having a 37-point lead going into the final term, Geelong got within five points in the final quarter thanks to great work by Jordan Murdoch. But for the home side it was not enough, suffering their second 13-point defeat in a row.
The Scorpions won the battle in the middle with David Rodan, Tom Couch and Jake Spencer in great touch on the ball, as well as Cam Pedersen down back. For Geelong, Nathan Vardy was their best with a goal in each term, whilst Troy Selwood, Dom Gleeson and Mark Corrigan were their best.
The win sees both teams join Williamstown and Box Hill on five wins / 20 points on the VFL ladder, Geelong dropping to fourth, and Casey moving to fifth. All four teams are two points behind new ladder leaders Port Melbourne.
