Finals contenders Geelong and Casey will go head-to-head on the weekend at Simonds Stadium, with both sides keen to rebound from defeats last weekend as Nick Duxson reports.
Despite dropping their first game of the year, the Cats remain at the top of the Peter Jackson VFL ladder, while the Scorpions are sitting in sixth position after going down by 10 goals to Box Hill.
Conditions
Winter is coming, but there’s no rain forecast this weekend. With the sun expected to shine, and a forecast temperature of 16 degrees, conditions should suit a fast-paced game at Simonds Stadium.
The Last Three
Geelong – WWL – The Cats had convincing wins over Frankston and Werribee, before being brought back to earth after the state game break with a 13-point loss to Collingwood. Skipper Dom Gleeson has been in good touch, while the Cats have posted three consecutive 100+ scores.
Casey – WLL – The Scorpions have had a mixed run of late, after a brilliant start to the season. A big win over Williamstown three weeks ago firmed Casey as a finals contender again, however they were narrowly defeated by Port Melbourne and thrashed by Box Hill in the past two rounds.
Last Meeting
Round 20, 2012 – Casey Fields – Geelong 16.13.109 def Casey 14.11.95
It was a riveting clash last year between these two sides. Geelong established an early lead, before the Scorpions responded with an eight goal second term – beanpole forward Jack Fitzpatrick (five goals) dominant. The Cats fought back in the third and final quarters to run out 14-point winners, with Shane Kersten booting five goals in the win.
The Key Match Ups
Who will go to Nathan Vardy? If the Cats’ midfield fires, the big forward could prove a handful for the Scorpions defence – although Cam Pedersen could be a suitable match up.
Up the other end, young star-in-the-making Jesse Hogan has taken the VFL by storm, and will again take some stopping. Mitch Brown played forward last week for the Cats, but has received a late Geelong AFL callup, leaving the Cats with a forward option to fill.
The battle of the ruckmen will again be intriguing, with Dawson Simpson and Jake Spencer both finding form at VFL level. Jack Fitzpatrick will offer the Scorpions’ support, while Andrew Banjanin has been named on the Cats’ extended bench.
Team Selections
Geelong’s form forward George Burbury makes his AFL debut this weekend, with Jordan Schroder returning. Troy Selwood will return to add some experience to the young Cats’ midfield.
Melbourne has named defender Tom Gillies and in-form ruckman Jake Spencer on an extended bench, with the Scorpions hanging onto the experienced David Rodan and Cam Pedersen.
Prediction – Cats by 21 points.
