Coburg has kicked off its season in a positive fashion with a confident first round win over Sandringham. After a slow start, and in trying conditions late in the game, Coburg was too strong for a tenacious Sandringham outfit on Sunday, running away with a 32-point win 18.13.121 to Sandringham 13.11.89 at Mantello Holden Oval as Troy Hallam reports.
Former Geelong ruckman, Orren Stephenson, proved his worth for Coburg early, but it was the Zebras who came out fighting in the first quarter, taking advantage of his hitouts while keeping the ball in their forward-50 and suffocating the Tigers’ back line.
While the forward pressure was intense, they were unable to capitalise, managing only three goals, while Coburg was still able to manage two of their own. Coburg’s Nick Maric was lively, while Nathan Wright started strongly for Sandringham.
Coburg coach, Tim Clarke, was obviously displeased with the workrate of his players at quarter-time, asking for a bigger effort from his midfield.
The Tigers lifted for their coach, while the Zebras also maintained an unyielding attack on the ball. The Richmond-listed players stood up, especially Chris Knights who made his presence felt and finished with an impressive 41 disposals.
Sandringham’s midfield stalwarts in Myke Cook, Adam Cockie, Tom Ledger and Seb Ross weren’t able to stamp their authority on the game, and looked to need the extra rotation that was missing when the Zebras’ captain, Marcus Marigliani, had to leave the ground after suffering a dental emergency.
Zebras’ Tom Curren worked his way into the game and finished with 24 disposals.
At three-quarter time, Sandringham coach, Simon McPhee, demanded more from his players, asking them to take the game on.
A torrential downpour greeted the players in the last quarter, and it was Coburg’s smaller men who were able to take advantage of the slippery conditions, with Brad Helbig (26 disposals) and Robin Nahas (22 disposals) putting the victory out of Sandringham’s reach.
Aaron Edwards and Liam McBean used their size and height to their advantage, kicking four goals each, and look to be a handy combination moving forward.
For the Zebras, it was ex-Swan, Trent Dennis-Lane, who was most effective in front of the big sticks, kicking five goals.
Sandringham will be looking for a speedy return through the Development League of defender and 2012 captain, Beau Dowler, to fortify their back line.
Both teams play away next week, with Coburg taking on Williamstown at Burbank Oval, while Sandringham meet last year’s premiers, Geelong, at Simonds Stadium.
