Today brings upon the opportunity for the Werribee Football Club to differentiate themselves and the Peter Jackson VFL competition from the rest of the Country.
The Werribee Tigers will go head to head with Claremont in the Foxtel Cup Grand Final, which aims to find the best state league team in Australia.
Werribee approach this match with a sense of conviction after defeating a strong Box Hill Hawks line up last weekend in the VFL. Despite their win, the Tigers dropped to fourth place on the Bailey Ladders ladder due to Geelong producing a percentage boosting win over the Bendigo Gold.
We caught up with Werribee Tigers Senior Coach Scott West to discuss this evening’s game.
“It’s going to be a great test, Claremont are a very good team and are proving that with their position on their local ladder and also making the Foxtel Cup Grand Final for the second year in a row.
“Playing in Perth at Subiaco will be a challenge in its self but we’ve been able to win at different grounds throughout this competition so we will attack the challenge head on,” West said.
West has selected a strong and experienced team to give his side the best shot at success.
“There won’t be many changes from our previous teams that have represented us throughout the Foxtel Cup, but we are wary that there are some management issues with our players so if guys are still sore from the weekend we won’t play them.”
The Foxtel Cup competition has fostered immense growth and improvement across many participating players.
“In terms of development for some of our players it’s been a great experience having to deal with travelling, playing on elite grounds and also playing on quality opponents each week.
“There have been many players who have been really good for us, not only from a Werribee list perspective but also from the Kangaroos with players from their list really putting their names up for senior selection,” West said.
Nathan Ablett is a prime example, after weeks in the Development League the key forward was given an opportunity to strut his stuff in Quarter Finals of the Foxtel Cup. Ablett’s performance was rewarded with selection into Werribee’s senior side and he has maintained that form since.
Similarly, Sam Gibson used this same Foxtel Cup game to prove his outstanding ability to North Melbourne coaches after countless consistent performances in the VFL. He was consequently elevated to make his AFL debut the following week.
This evening’s match provides Werribee with the ultimate bragging rights as well as a lucrative $60,000 prize. If successful, the Tigers will bestow the Peter Jackson VFL with back to back premierships.
The game will be broadcast live and exclusively on FOX FOOTY from 9:30pm EST with commentary by Barry Hall, Matthew Campbell, Ben Dixon and Adam Ramanauskas.
