An inaccurate Port Melbourne has won their second battle of the standalones for season 2012, disposing of Frankston to the tune of 89 point last Saturday at North Port Oval.
Despite dominating the scoring shots (12-7) in the first term, Port Melbourne amazingly found themselves behind on the scoreboard by five points. Unfortunately for the Port fans, only two of their 12 scoring shots resulted in majors, with Dean Galea the main culprit up forward having an inaccurate day with 6.5 for the afternoon.
The Dolphins – similar to their round one matchup – made the most of their early opportunities, but were unable to contain the Boroughs past the first quarter, as the home team went on the kick 23.9 to 8.5 after quarter time.
A seven goal to two second term changed the game for Port Melbourne, with the likes of Galea, Chris Cain, Sam Dwyer and Sam O’Sullivan finding the goals more often to give Port a 25 point lead at half time. O’Sullivan – making his senior debut for season 2012 – backed up his seven goal Foxtel Cup performance with three goals against the Dolphins, to keep pressure on other players for spots in the powerful Port forward line.
With the inclusion of O’Sullivan, Myles Pitt moved into defence, showing the versatility of the Port Melbourne line up.
Port put the game beyond doubt in the third term with eight goals to four, and went into the final term 63 points up. They extended this margin to 89 at the final change, restricting Frankston to just two final term goals, whilst kicking eight of their own.
Frankston’s Kyle Martin continued on from his good State game form to be named best on ground for the visitors, but his side were unable to stop the likes of John Baird and Shane Valenti who were again amongst the best for Port Melbourne.
Port this week makes the trip to Geelong who have recently dropped down the ladder after consecutive losses, whilst Frankston head home to host Sandringham.
