Round 1 Top v Bottom Encounter:
Round 1 of the Peter Jackson VFL Season will see Frankston take on Port Melbourne on Sunday 25th March at Frankston. This first match will give coach Simon Goosey a good indication of how his team has progressed in the off season against the reigning premiers. The Dolphins played Port Melbourne twice in 2011 with the Premier’s winning by 122 points in Round 6 and 90 points in Round 19. After a poor performance last year with only two wins, Frankston will want to start the Season on the right foot against 2011’s strongest team.
Light at the end of the tunnel:
Frankston did record some large losses throughout the 2011 Season, however there were some positive signs for the future as well. The Dolphins recorded two good wins against Coburg Tigers in Round 8 and 21 by 19 points and 67 points respectively – but the Tigers are the only club the Dolphins have defeated in the last two seasons.
Frankston were able to challenge a number of eventual finalists, but were unable to hold on in the final term to beat the likes of the Northern Bullants/Blues (16 points) and Box Hill Hawks (28 points).
The loss of Garbriel in the ruck will leave a huge hole in the Dolphins onball brigade, but James Orr looks a likely replacement.
Coaches Comments:
“We are looking for a big improvement on the last couple of years, with the list running a lot deeper we should see competition for spots the best it’s has been in 3 years. The games we have got into our kids over the last 2 years have also been important as we have a good core that has played 40 plus games. We haven’t putting a ceiling on how many games we’ll win we are just focusing on what we have to do and the results will take care of themselves. The main thing is we get the improvement across the board as we have built some really strong foundations over the last couple of years,” Goosey said.
