The AFL announced the Grand Final of the 2011 FOXTEL Cup – the state-league based knockout competition that was introduced for this season – would be played between Claremont and Williamstown at Patersons Stadium in WA on Saturday August 6, at 5.05pm Melbourne time.
Claremont was runner-up in the 2010 WAFL season while Williamstown placed third in last year’s VFL competition. The sides claimed their berths in the maiden grand final of the competition with semi-final victories over Port Adelaide and East Perth respectively.
The match will be broadcast live and exclusively on Fox Sports from 5pm-7pm EST.
AFL General Manager Game Development and Market Development David Matthews said the AFL had been delighted with the debut year of the competition, which would see two of the leading state league sides contest the first title.
“The semi-finals saw three separate state competitions represented and the final will feature a cross-state match-up between two sides both currently sitting second on their respective WAFL and VFL ladders,” Mr Matthews said.
“The matches have enabled state league players to pit their talents against similar clubs across the country, to experience the preparation required around travelling to play a match interstate and, most importantly, exposed the quality of all state league clubs and their competitions on a wider national stage.
“I would like to particularly thank Foxtel and Fox Sports for their support of the Foxtel Cup in its debut year and to acknowledge our key partner Coles, each of our state leagues and their teams and the players for their whole-hearted approach to the competition,” he said.
