Round 5 VFL action saw two clubs continue their winnings streaks, Port Melbourne & Box Hill Hawks, while Coburg opened its account for season 2014.
In wet weather football all clubs were challenged today, so let's take a look at how all the games played out in the Saturday night wrap:
Lions roar
Coburg recorded its first win since returning to VFL standalone status with an upset win against Northern Blues.
The Lions led from start to finish after Lech Featherstone kicked all three of his goals in the first half to set up the visitors’ advantage, as they ran out winners by nine points.
Wayward kicking at goal did not help the Blues' cause, or the loss of Matthew Watson late in the first quarter, but the intensity around the contest by Coburg was a key to the victory.
Holding a 30-point three quarter time lead, the Lions quickly saw their advantage cut to 18 points as the home side got the advantage out of the middle - Cameron Wood dominating in the ruck with 73 hit outs - to kick goals through Patrick Cripps and Denis Armfield.
The Blues got as close as seven points in the final term, but Coburg were able to hold on for a nine-point victory.
Daniel Cooper (19 disposals), Ozgar Uysal (21), Featherstone and Andrew Sturgess (26) were the best for Coburg, with Cripps (22 disposals), Jarryd Cachia (26), Wood and Joel Wilkinson (22) the best for Northern Blues.
Hawks continue to impress
Box Hill Hawks has recorded its biggest win of the season, with a crushing 106-point win over Frankston.
The result was Frankston's lowest score against the Hawks, held to 5.6 36 against the ladder leaders who produced 13 individual goal kickers for their 22 majors for the afternoon.
After the Dolphins replied to the opening two goals of the game by the Hawks, they had to wait till the opening minutes of the final term for their next, as Box Hill went on a 16 goal unanswered run in a dominant display.
Kyle Cheney had a major impact around the ground for the Hawks, along with Sam Cust, Jonathan Simpkin and Marc Lock.
With a 114-point deficit at three quarter time, Frankston kicked three goals to open the final term to add to their one goal in the first three terms, but the Hawks had all the answers to run out decisive winners.
Shannon Taylor was among the best for Frankston with three goals, along with Luke Potts, Ben Cavarra and Shane Hockey.
For Box Hill, Sam Collins kicked three goals, with Cust, Tim O'Brien, Liam Tobin and Simpkin two each.
Port remains undefeated
Port Melbourne remains undefeated after five rounds, accounting for Bendigo by 67-points.
The home side dominated from the start, keeping the Gold goalless in the first term, with inaccuracy costing Port a bigger quarter time lead with 3.6 for the term.
While Bendigo got on the board early in the second quarter, the tall timber for Port Melbourne proved difficult to contain, with David Fanning giving his mids first use of the ball, and Adrian Bonaddio (four goals) dangerous up forward.
A better second half performance would have pleased Bendigo coach Aussie Jones, but the trend of a goalless quarter in every game this year would be something he would like to eliminate from the Gold's record each week.
Former Gold player Shannen Lange impressed against his former club, along with Chris Cain (27 disposals), Sam Pleming and Toby Pinwill (27), with Tyrone Downie leading the best for Gold with three goals, and Bendigo Pioneer recruit Sam Heavyside and Liam Byrne continuing to impress.
