Round 2 was completed today in the Peter Jackson VFL, with winners: Geelong, Richmond, Williamstown, Werribee Tigers and the first draw of the season between Sandringham and Box Hill Hawks.
We take a look at how the games unfolded:
Nothing can separate Hawks and Zebras
Box Hill Hawks and Sandringham played out a thrilling draw - the Zebras salvaging two points from a match that they led for all but 10 minutes of the afternoon.
Sandringham stunned the Hawks with a blistering first term, with Tom Lee again providing a target up forward for Sandringham with three first goals.
After trailing by 41 early in the second term, the Hawks fought back in the second quarter, kicking the last four goals of the term to trail by but six points at half time.
Mitch O'Donnell got the Hawks within a point during the third term, but Zebras settled keeping their lead of 17 points at three quarter time.
The start of the final term was all Box Hill, as Mitch Hallahan opened the final term with a major, followed by a goal to Ben Ross – who was well held by Maverick Weller - to reduce the margin to just five points. A Hallahan free kick gave the Hawks the lead for the first time in the match midway through the quarter.
Sandringham were not done with yet, as Cam Shenton received hands from Terry Milera to push the Zebras back in front, but goals to Luke Lowden and James Sicily saw the Hawks out by 7 points.
A missed chance by Yilber Zijai almost saw Sandringham’s chances slip by, as they trailed by six points, with 29 mins gone, but when Milera made the most of a late chance, scores were tied and the siren sounded soon after – a draw.
Werribee fly home over Gold
Werribee has recorded its first win of the season, overcoming a sluggish start to race home with an 83-point win over Bendigo.
After trailing by seven points at quarter time, Werribee went on a goal kicking spree in the second term, kicking seven unanswered goals to hold a 38-point lead at half time.
While Bendigo kicked first two of the third term, the Tigers hit back to ensure they kept a 28-point lead at the final change.
A 10 goal to two final term saw the Tigers home to a big win, with Mason Wood and Ben Warren leading the way (four goals each), along with Jye Bolton, Sam Wright and Scott McMahon as their best.
Trent Bacon was the major goal kicker for the Gold with three, Alik Magin and Billy McInnes kicking two each, and Liam Byrne, Jesse Wallin and Jordan Hargreaves their best.
Cats defeat Casey on the road
Geelong halted a second half charge from Casey Scorpions for a 16-point win away from home.
After a goal for goal start to the first quarter, Jack Fitzpatrick gave Casey the lead three minutes into the second term. But six goals in a row burst opened up the game as Geelong grabbed the advantage leading into half time with a 32-point lead.
Casey returned the favour and opened the third term with first six majors, with former Cat Shannon Byrnes with three of them, as they grabbed the lead by three points at the 23-minute mark. Josh Walker broke the drought to get the Cats back in front, and they led by four points heading into the final term.
While Casey kicked the first of the final term, three in a row saw Geelong quickly out to a match winning 22-point lead that they would not relinquish.
Josh Walker kicked three goals and was among the best for Geelong, joining Jordan Schroder, Jackson Sheringham and Luke Bath.
Byrnes and Fitzpatrick kicked three each for Casey, with Evan Panozza, Byrnes, Mitch Gent and Neville Jetta their best.
Tigers over Lions
Richmond recorded its first win returning to a standalone status, doing enough to defeat Coburg by 42 points.
Coburg scored the first major, but Richmond replied with the next six in a row, with the tall timber up forward and better disposal out of the middle proving the difference. After a rev up by Peter German at quarter time, Coburg started to find their forward options with Matt Clark and Lech Featherstone leading well. Despite having more of the play, Coburg trailed by 21 at half time.
After an even third term, it was goal for goal to start the final quarter, but Richmond had done enough with four goals to two final term.
Orren Stephenson dominated in the ruck, with Richmond producing 89-28 hitouts for the afternoon. Captain Ross Young led by example in the middle, and was well supported by Anthony Miles (25 disposals) and Nathan Foley (20) – with the defensive Ben’s – Darrou and Waite – also among the best.
For Coburg, Andrew Sturgess was their best (26 disposals), along with Daniel Cooper (32 & 2 goals) and Adam Saad who played a stopping role in the middle.
Williamstown records first win
Williamstown has recorded its first win of the season, getting the better of former aligned partner Footscray (Western Bulldogs) by 41 points.
After a slow start, Williamstown kicked five unanswered goals to set up 27-point lead early in the second term, with Anthony Anastasio kicking two first half goals, and Ben Jolley and Adam Marcon dominant in the middle.
Their lead jumped out to 44 points in the third term, but Footscray kicked the last three of the quarter to cut margin back to 25 going into final term.
The Dogs had their chances early, but when Anastasio and Clouston both kicked their third and fourth goals respectively, the Seagulls were home.
Defensive pairing of Peter Faulks and Brad Mangan were among the best for Williamstown, along with Jack Charleston, Clouston, Marcon and Anastasio.
For Footscray, a wayward day in front of goal saw Tory Dickson their only multiple goal kicker with two, while Marcus Bontempelli, Brett Goodes, Mitch Honeychurch and Fletcher Roberts were their best.
