The Saturday games have been completed in the Peter Jackson VFL, and we look back at the day games before Werribee takes on Collingwood in the Saturday night game:
WILLIAMSTOWN d COBURG: Williamstown kicked 9 unanswered goals in the third term to set up an eventual 100 point win against Coburg. 11 minutes into the third term, Coburg had staged a revival through two early goals to Orren Stephenson up forward, to reduce the Seagulls lead to just a goal. What followed went against the trend of the game as Williamstown took total control of the match, kicking 17 of the last 19 goals of the game. Jake Stringer kicked four of his five goals during an eight minute purple patch in the third term, kicking four in a row in time on. Charlie Nastasi kicked 4 goals for the Seaguls, whilst Stephenson, Liam McBean and Jake Anderson were the only multiple goal kickers for Coburg with two each.
BOX HILL HAWKS d ESSENDON: Box Hill Hawks have opened their 2013 account with an 11-point win over Essendon in front of over 4,000 fans at Windy Hill. Essendon started the stronger in the first half, leading by 14 points at half time. But the Hawks shone in the third kicking seven goals to oneto hold a four goal lead at three quarter time. The Hawks held a 30 point lead early in the final term, before Essendon kicked four in a row to get within four points of the Hawks. But leading Box Hill forward Tom Gordon kicked his fourth of the game to stop the Bombers late run. The Hawks defence of Brian Lake, David Mirra and Kyle Cheney stood strong to hold the trio of Joe Daniher, Scott Gumbleton and Jason Winderlich to just one goal (by Gumbleton), after they combined for 15 last week.
CASEY SCORPIONS d NORTH BALLARAT: Casey Scorpions kept their unbeaten start to the 2013 season intact with a 9 point win over a fast finishing North Ballarat outfit. Despite Jack Watts not lining up for the Scorpions, the Scorpions led at every change. However the Roosters were able to kick five unanswered goals whilst keeping Casey to just 5 behinds to finish the match strongly and get close to pulling off an upset result. Jesse Hogan showed his potential for Casey kicking three first half goals (four for the match) whilst James Strauss had 26 disposals and Max Gawn showed promising signs along with Casey captain Evan Panozza. Steve Clifton wasted no time in finding his feet back in the VFL, racking up 22 disposals and kicking three goals, with Ben Jacob amongst the Roosters best.
NORTHERN BLUES d BENDIGO GOLD: The Northern Blues jumped to first spot on the Peter Jackson VFL ladder with a devastating 164 point win over Bendigo. The Blues missed equalling their highest total versus Bendigo by just 3 points as they kicked 15 unanswered goals between the first and third terms to claim a convincing win. Brent Bransgrove led the disposals with 28, followed by Ed Curnow with 27, Tom Bell with 26 and Adam Marcon with 23. Tyson Thomas jumped to second on the league goal kicking ladder with a bag of six – 3 in the second term – to take him to 11 for the season. He was well supported by Troy Menzel with 4, Luke Mitchell with 3 and Jeremy Laidler in a surprise move forward with 3 as well. Alik Magin was again amongst the better players for the Gold, along with Daniel Toman and Ricky Thomson.
