There may be no AFL in Victoria this weekend but 140 AFL-listed players will be running around at VFL grounds.
It presents footy fans with an excellent chance to see their future stars in action and also see some veteran footballers on their return from injury.
On Saturday, three-time AFL premiership player Mal Michael leads a crop of Essendon youngsters into battle for the Bendigo Bombers against Gary Ayres’ Port Melbourne at 1.10pm at TEAC Oval. The Borough is the form side of the competition and has won its past six matches.
Sunday, Melbourne’s Ricky Petterd and North Melbourne’s Jesse Smith return from injury during the North Ballarat and Sandringham clash at AUSTAR Arena at 2pm.
North Melbourne players will also be in action for Werribee Tigers against Geelong at Bartercard Oval at 2pm. Veteran Jess Sinclair and ruck prospect Todd Goldstein will line-up. For Geelong, young guns Tom Hawkins, Harry Taylor and Nathan Djerrkura will be pressing for AFL selection.
Carlton’s Andrew Walker, the number two selection in the 2003 AFL National Draft, continues his return from injury and will play for the Northern Bullants against Tasmania at Bellerive Oval at 2pm.
Andrew Raines will join Richmond team mates Jake King and 2007 recruit Alex Rance and play for Coburg Tigers against Box Hill Hawks at Box Hill City Oval at 2pm.
Steven Baker returns from injury for Casey Scorpions at Williamstown at 2pm. The Scorpions too will have Saints pair David Armitage and Ben McEvoy. Bulldog Jarrod Harbrow will be vice-captain of the Seagulls, who also boast young guns Callan Ward and Brennan Stack.
Collingwood full-back Simon Prestigiacomo continues his road to recovery against Frankston at Princes Park at 2pm. He will team up with Collingwood’s next wave of talent including Brent Macaffer, Alan Toovey and Shannon Cox.
