Round 9 action in the Peter Jackson VFL was completed today with wins to Coburg and Williamstown.
The Seagulls win sees them jump to third spot on the ladder, with Coburg now just one game and percentage outside of the top eight.
We take a long at how the games unfolded today:
Third win for Lions
Coburg recorded win number three for the season with a 68-point win over Bendigo.
The visitors led from start to finish, keeping the Lions in touch with the top eight teams.
Coburg stated their intentions early, with six unanswered goals to start the game; Lech Featherstone and Andrew Sturgess kicking two each to start the match to give the visitors a 37-point quarter time lead.
In the second term Bendigo fought back to win the term with four goals to two, and midway through the quarter cut the margin to just 19 points thanks to three from Tyrone Downie. Featherstone steadied the ship for Coburg close to half time to give the visitors a 24-point lead.
Coburg jumped out to a 41-point lead early in the third with three unanswered goals, with Downie adding his fourth to cut the Coburg run. But it was all the Lions again to end the term, with Ruairi Cleary kicking a couple in his senior debut to see them up by 57 at the final change.
In an uneventful final term, it took until time on for Coburg to kick the final two goals of the game, hold the home side goalless on the way to an 11-goal win.
Julian Hemala and Featherstone led the goal kickers for Coburg with three each, while Featherstone, Dan Venditti and Michael Hartley were among the best players.
Downie finished with four to be the best for the Gold, along with Grant Valles, Daniel Toman and Jackson Sketcher.
11 in a row for Seagulls in western derby
Williamstown has recorded its 11th straight win against Werribee with a nine point victory today at Burbank Oval.
The Seagulls overcame wayward kicking for goal in the first half where they kicked 11 behinds from 14 scoring shots, to claim the win.
After a goal for goal start, Werribee kicked the last three goals of the first term to get out to an eight point lead at quarter time. The two Ben’s – Brown and Warren – worked well together in the absence of Mason Wood to give their side the lead.
While Williamstown kicked the first of the second term, it was their only goal as they kicked another five behinds for the quarter. Fortunately for the Seagulls, Werribee were only to score one goal – to Ben Warren - with the margin back to five points at half time.
Werribee jumped out to an 18 point lead with the first two of the third term, but it sparked a three goal run for Williamstown as they finally found the goals up forward to trail by just one point at three quarter time.
Williamtown opened the final term with the first two goals to give them an eight point lead. Werribee were not finished with yet, as Jason Robinson snapped one from 30 out to reduce the margin back to two points with 10 minutes to go. After a number of missed chances, Scott Clouston kicked his second to finally provide Williamstown with a 10 point buffer an it was enough for them to hold on my nine points.
Clouston and Sam Critchley kicked two each for Williamstown, with David Fahey, Clouston, Adam Marcon and Cam Lockwood among their best.
Warren led the scoring for Werribee with three, with Jye Bolton, Jason Robinson and Tim McGenniss their best.
