Williamstown has bounced back from last week’s inaccurate performance against North Ballarat and its subsequent tumble from the top eight by defeating Collingwood by 48-points on Sunday as Catherine Durkin reports.
The inaccuracy of previous weeks still plagues the Seagulls and could have lead to their undoing as the Magpies converted effectively.
Chris Tarrant shone for Collingwood. Despite his side’s loss, the once forward turned defender managed to slot four goals – two in the second and two in the fourth.
But with greater fluency and direction through the midfield, thanks to the run provided by the likes of Brett Goodes, the Seagulls managed to create more opportunities up forward, allowing themselves to stamp a sense of dominance on the game.
Such dominance was epitomised by the sustained battle between experienced AFL defenders Nathan Brown and Cameron Wood, and the Williamstown forwards. While their experience and football nous came to the fore on several occasions, the Collingwood backline was no match for the constant ball supply the forwards received. Liam Jones led up well for Williamstown and scored 3 goals for his efforts.
Positives for the Magpies included their prominence in the ruck, with Jonathon Ceglar and Jarrod Witts providing a strong rucking combination. Paul Seedsman was another promising aspect, as he exuded a strong sense of intellect and composure in his ball use.
However, Williamstown’s ability to constantly provide loose men forward of the ball meant that Collingwood’s defence seemed to be always on the chase rather than in possession.
The win is a timely one for the out-of-form Williamstown, who now sit precariously at seventh on the ladder. They will now receive a touch of respite as they come into the bye. For the Magpies, they take on fourth placed Geelong, who achieved a convincing win over Box Hill at the weekend.
