The Werribee Tigers returned to form with a 78-point demolition of the Casey Scorpions at Avalon Airport Oval last Saturday as Ben Carbonaro reports.
After last week’s disappointing loss to the Bendigo Gold, the Tigers were looking to rebound against a second placed Casey team that had been in superb form for much of this season.
Werribee started strongly as they kicked five goals to two and controlled play for much of the first quarter. Some strong work by the Tigers defensive unit, led by Kyle Hartigan, made it tough for Casey to move the ball forward quickly. The Tigers held a 16-point quarter time lead.
The second quarter was highlighted by the athleticism and strong marking of North Melbourne rookie Majak Daw. Nathan Ablett also became a factor as the Tigers kicked six goals to two to lead by 43-points at half-time.
Strong wind and rain made the third quarter one that featured plenty of stoppages around the ground. Despite the Tigers continuing to build a big lead, Casey staged something of a comeback but it was too late. Werribee kicked three goals to one to effectively end any hope for the visitors as they trailed by 59 points at the final break.
The Tigers put on something of a skills clinic in the last quarter pilling on six goals to three to complete an impressive win.
Coach Scott West was pleased with his team’s return to form.
“Good to bounce back, you never like to lose but I think you judge a group by how they react the next week. When you can get the flow and run, then take the game on, sometimes it falls for you, which it did today.”
Nathan Ablett played his best game for the Tigers kicking four goals in a best on ground performance. Ben Ross was outstanding in the midfield and didn’t stop running for four quarters.
West was impressed with Ablett’s performance
“You know when he gets it (football), within 35-40 he’s a deadly kick.
“He provided decoy leads, he got into space and contested in the air and his hands were terrific providing opportunities for the other guys.”
Jack Fitzpatrick, Leigh Williams and Lucas Cook all booted two goals while brother of Olympic runner Jeff Riseley, Michael was best for the Scorpions.
Werribee’s Foxtel Cup campaign continues next Saturday morning when they face Queensland club Morningside in a semi final at the Gabba in Brisbane. They return to VFL action when they host Coburg Tigers on Sunday 15th July. Casey Scorpions continue their top five battles as they host ladder leaders Port Melbourne on Sunday.
