Lost & Gained
2011 Season’s end saw the loss of many experienced players for the Werribee Tigers. The Club’s high turnover included the departure of Captain, Dom Gleeson to Geelong’s VFL side and Michael Rockefeller to Old Geelong.
However, the Club has made a solid attempt to cover their losses by recruiting heavily from all levels of the game. The Tigers have picked up AFL players; Nathan Ablett, Jye Bolton, Tim Ruffles, and Ben Ross. They will also be strengthened by their alignment with North Melbourne who has recruited Sam Gibson and Malcolm Lynch, both experienced VFL players.
With the inclusion of other experienced VFL players and up-and-coming 2011 TAC Cup players, Werribee should present a quality line up for Season 2012.
The Tigers have employed Scott West, ex-Bulldog champion as their new Senior Coach. West will provide the Club with 324 games of AFL knowledge and a history of incomparable consistency.
With a list like this, Werribee might take their Season one step further this year and make the Grand Final.
Coach’s Comment:
From my point of view I think new had a really good pre season. Pre Christmas there was a real focus on getting the players as fit as we could, there was also a focus on skill development. Post Christmas we again wanted to focus on fitness skill but with a larger concentration on player education on the way we wanted to play. The application and dedication of the players over this period was first class and I believe they are ready for a long season.
I believe we have a lot of players at different stages of their careers that need watching, players like Tudor, a key back or fwd, Fairley, also a key back and fwd, Battaglia and Lucas both small fwds and also young rucks Jones and Eade. All these guys have come straight out of the TAC and are young guys I hope are all looking at having an AFL career.
We also have guys like Hartigan, O Dwyer, Ross, Ablett and Ruffles who are more mature players who I believe are still at an age where there best footy is ahead of them.
I think most clubs would be very similar in what they would like to achieve in 2012. For us the main goal is to be competitive enough week in week out, to win enough games to make finals. I know it’s a shocking cliché by you can only really look at one week at a time. If you look to far forward you lose site on the job you have to do to get there
