SUNDAY'S VFL Grand Final provided food for thought for incoming Western Bulldogs coach Brendan McCartney, who watched a Williamstown team containing 15 Bulldogs suffer a heavy defeat at the hands of Port Melbourne.
Rookie-listed forward Matthew Panos was one of the few shining lights with four goals as Port Melbourne, who aren't affiliated with an AFL club, scored a 22.12 (144) to 13.10 (88) win.

German shattered by grand final loss
WILLIAMSTOWN coach Peter German cut a dejected figure after his side's 56-point loss against Port Melbourne in the Victorian Football League grand final on Sunday.
The Seagulls drew within 15 points of their opponent early in the final quarter at Etihad Stadium, but the Borough booted the last seven goals of the game to claim the flag 22.12 (144) to 13.10 (88).
"You work so hard and you know the players have worked so hard," German said when asked about the disappointment of falling at the final hurdle.

Last-quarter barrage caps unbeaten year for VFL premiers Port Melbourne
IT was the perfect end to the perfect season.
Port Melbourne, challenged by Williamstown as it cut the margin to 15 points at the start of the last quarter, lifted to a gear not even a side containing 15 AFL-listed players could match.
The Borough slammed home the last seven goals of yesterday's VFL grand final to the dismay of the Seagulls and tears of many long-time Port supporters, including assistant coach Peter "Crackers" Keenan.
And Hawthorn great Gary Ayres coached his first premiership to add to an AFL career littered with medals won in September.

Seagulls grounded
WILLIAMSTOWN'S premiership dream was extinguished at the final hurdle on Sunday as a clinical Port Melbourne claimed the Victorian Football League premiership after a breathtaking display in the season decider.
Searching for their first flag since 2003, the Seagulls started strongly before being overwhelmed by the Borough, who collected the silverware by 56 points, 22.12 (144) to 13.10 (88).
In front of a crowd of 11,859 at Etihad Stadium, Port Melbourne became the first side since North Melbourne in 1918 to complete an undefeated season, while the plucky Seagulls were left to ponder a missed opportunity.

Port Melbourne crushes Williamstown to claim VFL flag
THEY said it couldn't be done, that a VFL club with no AFL affiliation would ever win the premiership.
Today Port Melbourne's champion team slayed the skeptics, capping a glorious season with a 56-point grand final victory over its great rival Williamstown at Etihad Stadium.
Port went through the year undefeated, compiling a 21-0 record. Little wonder club long-tooths maintain this is the best Borough team in the club's long and distinguished history.
After the siren supporters bedecked in blue and red swarmed on to the ground to congratulate coach Gary Ayres and his players, and thank them for delivering Port its first flag since 1982.
The fact that it came at the expense of old foe Willy made it all the more satisfying.

Gulls demolished by top Borough
WILIAMSTOWN’S quest for a historic Foxtel Cup/VFL grand final double was shattered on Sunday by an irrepressible Port Melbourne, which capped off a remarkable unbeaten season to claim the premiership at Etihad Stadium.
In the first grand final between the two arch-rivals since 1964, Port Melbourne was simply too good, reversing a 21-point first-quarter deficit to run out 56-point winners.
Port Melbourne coach Gary Ayres said people had written off a stand-alone team’s chances of winning the premiership, but in many ways it proved to be a great advantage.

PORT Melbourne capped off a perfect undefeated season to win its first flag in 29 years after a dominant 56-point win over Williamstown in the VFL grand final at Etihad Stadium yesterday.
It was Port coach Gary Ayres’ first coaching premiership after winning five flags as a Hawthorn player.
He rates it ”pretty high” among his success at the Hawks.

Much has been made of the absolute epic we saw at the MCG on Friday night and the ruthless efficiency displayed by Geelong 24 hours later.
As a result, we've got the right grand final match-up with the Magpies up against the Cats, the two best teams of 2011.
More on that later because for me, what encapsulated the weekend of football came at Etihad Stadium on Sunday where Port Melbourne completed an undefeated season by beating Williamstown in the VFL grand final.
It was like watching the type of football I grew up with in the 1980s and 1990s - tough, skilful, end-to-end and most of all, bloody entertaining.

Port Melbourne win 29th VFL premiership
Port Melbourne broke a 29-year drought to win their 16th VFL premiership, completing a perfect undefeated season with a 56-point victory over Williamstown in the grand final at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
The Borough, just one of two teams without AFL affiliation, overran the Western Bulldogs-aligned Williamstown, who had 15 AFL listed players, 22.12 (144) to 13.10 (88).
But delighted Port Melbourne coach Gary Ayres conceded it will be impossible for the group to remain together as AFL recruiters look to build an elite competition that grows to 18 teams next season.
