It's often said that the third quarter, is the premiership quarter. And the Tigers looked every bit a premiership side yesterday, as they slammed home six unanswered goals in the third term to secure a 31 point win.
Collingwood started proceedings off with a brilliant set shot from Chris Bryan who belted one through from 45 out at the five minute mark. Not to be outdone Coburg responded with two quick goals, one from a revived Cleve Hughes. Collingwood's Rohan Frost chipped in moments later with a brilliant crumbing goal, courtesy of a Coburg turnover and again at the 20 minute mark with a great goal from the square. Just before the siren Reiwoldt and Edwards goaled for the Burgers, however it was the Pies who dominated possesion in the first quarter, but a poor conversion rate saw them trailing by 3 points at the first break.
It was a far tighter affair throughout the second quarter, with Collingwood just outscoring the Burgers to go into the half-time break with a three point lead. Brad Dick was outstanding in the second quarter for the Pies popping through two great goals, while the only players for the Tigers to make an impact were Jarred Oakley-Nicholls and Jack Reiwoldt.
Whatever Jade Rawlings said to his troops at half-time, obviously had the desired affect. And while it was a slow start to the third quarter with the first ten minutes resulting in no score. The second half of the third quarter, was a scoring feast with the Tigers dominating the midfield. Coburg smashed home six unanswered goals, two from Reiwoldt. Horne, Schultz, Vickery and Caruso all contributing the remaining goals.
While Collingwood were outstanding in the last quarter, the damage had already been done during the third. The Pies played catch up football for the remainder of the game, but were never really a chance due to the onslaught of goals from the Tigers in the third quarter. Outstanding efforts from Sean Rusling who made his comeback for the Pies, however his relief was short lived as the youngster ended the game with a suspected fractured cheekbone.
Reiwoldt was king of the cats booting home six goals, and without a doubt earned a recall back to the Richmond list. Other Burgers that played instrumental roles were Liddle, Thompson and Tom Hislop who is certainly developing into a tremendous player. Brad Dick, Pendlebury and Blight were all serviceable for the Pies, with Dick kicking a bag of three and is a certainty to line up for the seniors next week.
In the end, however it was Coburg that keep fighting and took advantage of their scoring opportunity's when they came their way. Coburg were however coming off a bye, and Collingwood had a very tough encounter with Box Hill last week. All of these factors played a contributing role to the end result, with Coburg being very lucky to get away with a win.
