Casey's off-season recruting blitz has continued with a new forward and a new assistant coach.
The Scorpions have added VAFA sharpshooter Matthew Moore to its forward line while former player Andrew Lacko lobs as an assistant to new coach Peter German.
Moore, from De La Selle, finished second in the VAFA A-section goal kicking list. His tally of 59 goals came depsite missing five games.
Noted for his accurate kicking, soft hands and fast leads, Moore's best effort was 10 goals against Uni Blacks in round eight, to help steer De La to its first win of the season.
But it was his performance in the VAFA's Under-23 clash with South Australia at the Junction Oval last year that alerted Casey's Football Manager Craig Lees to Moore's potential.
“Moore kicked six goals that day and was a star, but the impressive part of his game was his work ethic," Lees told www.scorpions.com.au
“He kicked three goals from defensive pressure, so it was at this point I knew I had to have this guy on our list."
The 194cm and 93kg Moore has lead the goal kicking for his A grade club the last two seasons but said it was time to test his game at the highest level in Victoria.
“It’s been a hard decision for me to make and I have so many mates at De La, but I think the timing is right to have a crack at the VFL, and I’m looking forward to playing with AFL players”, Moore said.
And Lees believes his new recruit has what it takes to possibly reach an AFL list.
"I have been chasing him for a while, from August last year, so to have Matt on our list is a great asset to our forward line and club, he is the type of player that with his flair and defensive pressures, that if he had a consistent year could find himself on an AFL rookie list in 2010," he said.
"I’ll be pushing for Matt to be the best player he can be, and if he can do that, then hopefully an AFL door will open."
Meanwhile, the Scorpions are also trumpeting the arrival of Lacko.
Lacko played 133 games for Dandenong between 1986 and 1995 winning two best and fairests. Lacko later switched to the Scorpions but injury prevented him from playing a game with his new club.
Lees said Lacko would look after the club's defence.
"He lives in Cranbourne and watched the Scorpions regularly since we moved to Casey Fields, he has a great understanding of the game and will be a great addition to our coaching staff," Lees enthused.
