A fast finishing Footscray took home the four points to cement themselves in the Peter Jackson VFL top four, with a 45-point win over Collingwood, as Dale Fenney reports.
The win was the fourth in a row for the Bulldogs, at the same time inflicting back to back defeats for the first time this year on Collingwood.
Collingwood burst out of the blocks kicking the first goal within 30 seconds, but the remainder of the quarter belonged to Footscray. The Bulldogs dominated possession kicking the next four goals, with Jack Redpath continuing his good form with two first term goals.
New Magpies recruit Tony Armstrong was able to get one back for the home side, cutting the margin back to 12 points, but two late goals to Jason Johannisen and Ayce Cordy had the Bulldogs out by 29 points at quarter time.
Footscray started the second quarter strongly with Redpath kicking his third goal, giving the visitors a lead by six goals. Collingwood started to slow the game down and stopped Footscray’s run and carry which produced three straight goals for the Magpies to Ben Kennedy, Lachlan Ferguson and Mat Suckling, reducing the deficit to 16 points at the main break.
Redpath scored his fourth goal within minutes of the start of the second half. Back to back goals from both teams saw the visitors leading by four goals, until a late goal from Footscray’s Mitch Honeychurch put the margin out by 28 points at three quarter time leaving the Magpies with a lot of work to do in the last quarter.
Footscray put the game beyond doubt early in the last quarter, scoring four straight goals in the first eight minutes stretching the margin out to over 50 points. Collingwood kicked three late goals to Tim Allan, Caolan Mooney and Lachlan Ferguson but the damage was done, Footscray running out winners by 45 points to extend its winning run to four.
Next week Collingwood play Richmond at Morwell Recreation Reserve at 2:00pm Saturday afternoon whilst Footscray take on North Ballarat at Simonds Stadium also 2:00pm on Saturday afternoon.
