WERRIBEE has outplayed Sandringham at Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Saturday, winning by 67 points after a stellar four-quarter performance.
The Tigers kicked eight goals to one in the first quarter and Sandringham was no match for a well-drilled Werribee, as Nick Ciantar reports.
The Tigers had consistent pressure and were efficient with their ball use in blustery conditions. Jarred Moore’s pressure for Werribee was phenomenal and he was best afield with 32 disposals. Sandringham ball magnet Adam Cockie (22 disposals, one goal) was his tagger throughout the game and Moore comfortably had the better of the dual.
Werribee was ruthless all over the field, which disallowed Sandringham easy access into their forward 50.
Tom Lee (12 disposals, one goal) and Beau Maister (11 disposals, two goals) were ineffective up forward and the Zebras lacked a small forward. Werribee defenders Trent Shinners (seven disposals, one goal) and Sam Wormald (21 disposals) had the jobs on Maister and Lee respectively.
Werribee’s coach John Lamont won key match ups all over the ground. He matched up Tom Gribble and Seb Ross together and this was another key victory for the Tigers. Gribble finished with 29 disposals and one goal and was far more potent with his usage than his opponent Ross (33 disposals, two goals).
Werribee had the better of Sandringham throughout the contest and they kept the Zebras goalless in the third quarter. Sandringham was missing some crucial players such as Cameron Shenton, Maverick Weller, Sam Dunell and Billy Longer, but the Tigers’ class rose to the top.
Daniel Currie (14 disposals) was far superior in the ruck against young American Jason Holmes and Lewis Pierce played his first game back from injury. Currie was intercepting marks across the ground and outmuscled the young ruckman.
Ben Speight (23 disposals) was bullish in the third term while Ben Warren (16 disposals, two goals) was too strong for Tom Simpkin.
Sandringham has now lost two games in a row after being undefeated in the first five games.
Ross was the best despite being tagged, Brodie Murdoch (14 disposals) was damaging at times and Josh Saunders (21 disposals, one goal) finished the game off well.
Myke Cook and James Munro both finished with 21 disposals off half back and first gamer Lachie Ritchie (six disposals) showed some promising signs when moved onto Warren in the last term.
Sandringham has a bye next round while Werribee host Richmond on Saturday in the ABC telecasted game from 1pm.
