Just the two matches today, with the winners Footscray and Casey Scorpions.
Footscray jumped up the ladder, into the top eight and into fourth spot, while the Northern Blues dropped from the eight for the first time this season.
Let's take a look at the results today:
Footscray ends Sandringham's winning run
Sandringham’s winning run has come to an end, defeated by 40 points at the hands of Footscray.
The Bulldogs led from start to finish, kicking the first four goals of the game to take the early advantage, which they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. It took till time on in the first term for the Zebras to register their first goal of the game, cutting the quarter time margin to 24 points after a damaging quarter of football from Marcus Bontempelli with three goals.
Bontempelli quickly kicked his fourth midway through the second term (with his 18 first half disposals), and it opened the flood gates for the Bulldogs. Footscray produced an eight goal to three term, with Clay Smith (three goals for game), Koby Stevens (three for the term), and Jack Redpath (four) all helping the ‘home’ side to a 59-point half time lead.
Footscray led by as much as 67 points late in the third term, but a final term resurgence helped Sandringham back to a respectable scoreline. After the Bulldogs kicked the first of the final term, Sandringham strung five in a row together to ensure the final margin did not reflect too badly on their first defeat of the season.
Bontempelli was the standout for Footscray, along with fellow 2013 draftee Mitch Honeychurch, Stevens, Smith and Ayce Cordy.
For Sandringham, Kenny Ong on the wing, Cam Banfield, Elliott Le Grice, James Munro and Sam Dunnell were their best, with Ong their only multiple goal kicked with two.
Scorpions bounce back
Casey Scorpions bounced back from back to back defeats with a 16-point win over Northern Blues. After being undefeated after three rounds, the Blues have lost their next three to be bundled out of the top eight.
After Northern Blues opened the game with the first goal, it was Tim Smith that opened up the game with three of his five goals kicked in the opening term.
Leading by 26 points at half time, the Blues fought back kicking the first three goals of the term to get back within six points, as Nick Graham, Patrick Cripps and Jarryd Cachia utilised the good work from Cameron Wood to get first use of the ball from the middle.
The margin was eight points entering the final term, and the last quarter was a dour struggle. The deadlock – which sat at 10 points as no one could produce a major – was broken deep in time on by Jayden Hunt as he kicked Casey’s 10th goal of the game to give them a 16 point win.
Leading the way for Casey was Tim Smith with five first half goals and was among their best along with Sam Blease, Jordie McKenzie and Viv Michie.
For the Northern Blues, Cachia (31 disposals), Graham (32), Andrew McInnes and Brent Bransgrove in his senior return (16 and two goals) were the best, with Tom Wilson their only other multiple goal kicker.
