COBURG caused one of many upset results for Round 14 when they defeated Werribee Tigers at home by three points in a nail biting affair last weekend. In match that threatened to be a blow out at half time, a determined effort by Werribee in the final term saw the contest go right down to the final siren, as Luke Armstrong reports.
The first quarter was tight, and in greasy conditions both teams flooded into Coburg’s attacking 50. Robin Nahas was creative early, and proved to be among the best for Coburg on the day as the home side led by six points at quarter time.
Majak Daw and Daniel Currie rotated ruck duties for Werribee, and had the advantage in the middle. But it was not reflected on the scoreboard as Werribee had to wait till the 28 minute mark to score their only goal of the term. While Coburg were inaccurate in the second quarter, scoring only four goals from their 11 scoring shot, they were looking comfortable, and went into the long break with a 31 point lead.
Werribee had more of the ball in the third term, but couldn't convert on the scoreboard, suffering the same inaccuracy as Coburg. They went into the last change 22 points down.
The last term saw a plucky come-back from Werribee, showing the form that had eluded them earlier in the game. They stormed into the last quarter with rampaging glee, recording two goals in the opening six minutes.
It was Ben Warren who finally put Werribee in front by four points at the 16 minute mark, but it was snatched back three minutes later by Coburg’s Ben Clifton, benefitting from a free kick. Coburg defended their lead gallantly over the last 10 minutes of the match, and in the end time ran out on Werribee’s turbo-charged final quarter. Coburg victorious by three points.
Coburg’s Daniel Venditti was a clear best-on-ground, always with plenty of space and time to execute. Nick Maric and Brad Helbig were both stoic in for Coburg, providing plenty of run for their side.
Coburg travel to Preston City Oval to meet Northern Blues next Sunday, while Werribee make the trip to North Ballarat next Saturday.
