WILLIAMSTOWN has emerged with a surprisingly easy victory over the Box Hill Hawks in Round 12 of the Peter Jackson VFL, as Philippe Perez reports
Despite being held scoreless in the final term, the Seagull’s early onslaught proved enough, prevailing by 25 points 16.15 (111) to 13.8 (86) at Box Hill City Oval on Sunday.
The game was played at break-neck speed from the first bounce with the Seagulls’ forwards muscling their way to an early advantage.
The Seagulls pummelled five goals straight off the bat and ran circles around the Box Hill defenders. This was evident with five different Williamstown players all goaling in the onslaught.
The goals were early rewards for all those players who contributed greatly in various ways for the Seagulls throughout the game. Ed Carr was especially good in the first half, showing his pise under pressure.
Dylan Addison (four goals) was the star performer for the whole game and seemed to be everywhere for the Seagulls.
Box Hill did make a statement at the beginning of the second half, slotting three quick goals and attacking more forcefully down the middle.
But the already under strength Hawks were dealt cruel blows when Mitch Hallahan and Matt Spangher went down injured.
Spangher had been a shining light with three goals, while Sam Illes and Tom Gordon also put in solid performancesfor the Hawks.
Williamstown shut up shop in the last quarter and didn’t seem to want to attack as much as they did for the first three quarters, which made for a dreary end of the game.
As soon as there was 15 minutes left on the clock the win was a formality for the Seagulls, and they looked to seemingly want to chip the ball around without any attacking ambition.
Box Hill took advantage of that with Marc Lock and Pat Lawlor slotting in easy goals, and the team actually won the fourth quarter.
Seagulls defender Lukas Markovic said his side’s lack of performance at the end wasn’t ideal but that he was still happy with the win.
“We had a focus to have a bit of intensity over all four quarters which is something we’ve lacked a little this year. It was a bit disappointing to give (Box Hill) a window at the end there, but overall I thought we were pretty good.”
